1. Describe pathology for each gland.
* Lacrimal: Multiple epithelial tumours are located in the lacrimal gland with a pleomorphic adenoma as the most common. A spectrum of lymphoid tumors is also likely to develop.
* Parotid: Occur due to viral infections such as mumps. Typically, mumps causes bilateral inflammation of the parotid glands.
* Salivary glands in general: Pathology includes inflammatory conditions and bacterial or viral infections. Inflammatory conditions include sialoliths and granulomatous. Infectious causes are mumphs, parotitis and HIV lymphadentis.
* Thyroid gland: Triggered by excess hormone (hyperthyroidism) or insufficient hormone (hypothyroidism).
2. What are the possible causes for each?
* Lacrimal: viral infection like mumps cause acute swelling of the lacrimal gland. Chronic swelling is caused by non-infectious inflammatory disorders such as sarcoidosis, thyroid eye disorder and orbital pseudotumour.
* Parotid: Bacterial or viral infections such as mumps.
