By the very nature of their position, any coach is a representative of an entire profession and sport. At the college level, a coach's role is even more critical because college sports enhance school unity and spirit, which allows athletes to take pride and connect themselves to the institution’s educational goals. College coaches significantly influence athletes' lives and can shape their character and values (Hamilton & LaVoi, 2020). As a result, by exhibiting ethical behavior required of role models, such as integrity and good sportsmanship, coaches can inspire college athletes to strive for excellence both on and off the field (PPT slide 10). How important is it for the coach to be a role model at the high school level? Unlike elite or professional athletes who focus on sleeping, training and eating, high school athletes are concerned about various things such as relationships, hobbies, exams and classes. Consequently, coaches must be role models since it is unrealistic to assume that high school athletes can follow the same day-to-day recipe as professional athletes. Furthermore, high school can be an insensitive environment for a lot of kids, especially when family problems and bullying are involved. Therefore, while acting as role models, it is also essential for high school coaches to provide a positive experience for all students (PPT slide 10).
