A parent may become an occasional sideline screamer for a variety of reasons. One is a huge emotional commitment. How their kid performs may make parents proud or reflect poorly on their parenting. Anger might flare when expectations aren't fulfilled, or parents believe their kid is being treated unjustly. One such factor might be unfulfilled sports aspirations. Some parents get too engaged in the result because they transfer their goals onto their kids. And last, there might be a lot of competitive pressure in child sports. When things don't go their way, parents only interested in winning might forget about sportsmanship (Sports Ethics Chapter 5).
Question #2: How should youth sports leagues penalize parents who exhibit unethical behavior?
Leagues of youth sports have a toolset for dealing with inappropriate parental conduct. The first measure might be to remind parents of the code of behavior in writing or orally. Leagues might indirectly affect the parent if the behavior continues by restricting their child's playing time. This might be a wake-up call for parents who value their child's involvement. Extreme circumstances may call for a temporary or permanent game attendance ban. Still, leagues must consider how serious the offense is. While fines might be an easy fix, they can also foster a "pay to play" culture. Expulsion should be a last option as it strips a youngster of parental support. Leagues must aim for a compromise encouraging good sportsmanship while considering the effects on young athletes (Sports Ethics Chapter 5).
