Your second assignment, Theory Application, is due in Week 5. The information and activities in Weeks 4 and 5 will help you complete your assignment. Do the following this week:
Read the Week 5 assignment instructions and rubric.
Review the case presented in the movie you selected for your Week 3 assignment, and consider how your chosen theory could be used to guide the processes of assessment, intervention, and evaluation.
In the Week 3 assignment, you identified and analyzed a specific developmental theory to apply to a case study from a chosen film. In this assignment, you will build on the work you have done by analyzing ecological systems theory and deciding on an actual application from a person-in-environment perspective. As with last time, it is vital to support the application of your chosen theory with scholarly research in the Capella library. Make sure that you are introducing your chosen character and provide an explanation of their presenting problem from your chosen case study.

For a person-in-environment perspective, you might want to ask yourself the following questions.
What systems provide the client support?
What systems may be hindering the client?

Describe an intervention based on ecological systems theory that is applicable and relevant to the chosen character.

Oskar Schell from the movie Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close portrays signs of a child experiencing a psychological condition. Before the death of his father (Thomas Schell) during 9/11, they were not only close but also played games together. One such game is the Reconnaissance Expeditions. The movie did well to inform the viewer that Oskar's relationship with his father was stronger than his relationship with his mom (Linda Schell). Oskar is a child with sensory issues, anxiety, and difficulties in social situations. After the death of his father, Oskar notes that the list of things he feared increased. He is afraid of public transportation, elevators, loud things, ringing things, tunnels, tall things, smoking things, and bridges. The ecological systems theory by Bronfenbrenner can be used to assess the experiences of Oskar Schell and develop an intervention for improvement.
Key Components of the Ecological Systems Theory
The ecological systems theory considers child development as a product of environmental connections (Crawford, 2020). In this sense, the systems in a child's environment shape their development. The theory divides an individual's environment into five levels: microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem (Figure 1).

As the first level of the theory, the microsystem encompasses the aspects that a child directly interacts with in their immediate environment. As can be seen in Figure 1, the microsystem encompasses aspects such as family, friends, neighbors, and school. The mesosystem comprises the relationship between different microsystems; for example, how home and school interact (Crawford, 2020). The third level (exosystem) comprises aspects such as media and governments that may indirectly influence a child's development. At the fourth level, there is the macrosystem which describes the societal structure and culture. The chronosystem is at the fifth level and takes into account the time and place within which one is raised (Crawford, 2020). The components most applicable to the case of Oskar Schell include the microsystem, the mesosystem, and the exosystem.
The ecological systems theory can be useful in the assessment, intervention, and evaluation of Oskar's developmental condition. Oskar's microsystem is made up primarily of his family and school. While he made adult friends in the course of the movie, his father and mother had a significant influence on his growth. Therefore, from the microsystem component of the ecological systems theory, one can assess Oskar's experience and develop an intervention. The mesosystem component of the theory can also be used to assess Oskar in the sense that his community and home environment interact to influence his life. When it comes to the exosystem, mass media in the form of television, influenced Oskar's behavior in the movie. Therefore, the ecological systems theory is relevant and applicable in assessing Oskar's condition and developing a befitting intervention strategy.
