Childhood Trauma and Brain Development Student’s Name Institution Course Number and Name Instructor’s Name Date Childhood Trauma and Brain Development Chapter five of “The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog” by Perry and Szalavitz (2017) presents the case of eighteen-year Leon, convicted for the brutal murder of two girls aged twelve and thirteen. Leon was sixteen when he committed the murders. Now convicted in prison, Leon faces the death penalty. Leon is a sociopath, devoid of any feelings for other people. As an infant, her mum who also suffered from a developmental condition, left him alone at home while she went for long walks with his older brother, Frank. As a result, Leon developed a cold heart and an inability to empathize. Even after killing the two girls, he does not show any remorse and wonders why their parents are grieving when he is the one who has been sent to jail. Engage For a social worker to engage Leon, it is important that they have strong communication skills and empathy.
