Case History Paper: Selena Gomez Student Instructor Course Date Case History: Selena Gomez Introduction In 2018, Selena Gomez went into a psychosis which prompted her to seek medical treatment, and in the medical facility, she was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIH) defines Bipolar disorder as a mental disease that causes unusual shifts in an individual’s energy, mood, activity, and concentration (NIS, 2024). According to Selena Gomez’s manager, Theresa, the American-born musician started hearing voices during her Revival tours and did not understand what was happening, until the diagnosis in 2018. During her hospitalization, it is reported that Selena Gomez was not just unrecognizable but was also suffering from paranoia and did not trust anyone including family members (Armanani, 2023). This paper explores Selena Gomez's struggle with Bipolar disorder while pinpointing factors in her life including social, psychological, and biological factors that might have directly or indirectly contributed to her mental disorder. Additionally, signs and symptoms of her mental illness are explored and compared with DSM criteria for Bipolar Disorder to confirm if Selena meets the set diagnostic criteria. Biological Factors: Family History and Medical problem Selena Gomez was diagnosed with Lupus in 2014 and subsequently underwent a kidney transplant as a result of complications brought about by the disease in 2017. Lupus disease, an autoimmune condition whereby one’s immune system generates antibodies that attack healthy cells, saw Selena experience major health problems from 2014 to 2020 with major symptoms being weight loss, painful joints, and fatigue. According to the Johns Hopkins Lupus Research Center, anxiety and depression affect over a third of people diagnosed with Lupus, as was the case with Selena (Armanani, 2023). In a study by Hu et al., (2021) 50%of renal transplant patients experience anxiety with 25% or more reporting severe cases of depression post-surgery. Lupus and the subsequent renal transplant culminated in severe depression which potentially triggered Selena Gomez’s bipolar disorder. In addition to mental health problems, Selena has a complicated family history which potentially played a role in her mental illness. In her documentary, My Mind & Me which was released in 2022, it is evident that her family relationships have been complicated especially with her father. With her parents divorced while she was only five she had to stay with her mother alone. In an interview with PopSugar, Selena is quoted as saying: “I blame my mother a lot for the divorce because I wanted a family.. I still feel bad about that” (Armanani, 2023). The disconnection between her parents impacted her men...
