Introduction
Traditional education vs. online education is a new debate in the discourse of knowledge. With the rise of the internet and smart devices such as mobiles, tablets, and laptops, almost every human activity has gone online, including education (Haleem & Javaid, 2019). Undoubtedly, it increased learning by serving the off-campus population from remote areas. Therefore, distance learning successfully ends some of the voids created by traditional, campus-based education. Moreover, online education has a wide platform that offers increased accessibility. Through technology, many students can access the class from remote areas (Muthuprasad et al. 2021).
Thus, distance learning offers more to students than the traditional education system in some cases. However, technological advancements and the augmentation of online learning have not made traditional education obsolete. While online education offers tremendous advantages, traditional education also fosters interpersonal skills and provides organized classrooms for students.
Comparing and Contrasting Online Education and Traditional Education
* Accommodation
The first and foremost difference between the learning patterns is accommodation, or accommodative capacity, between both paradigms. Online education has a clear edge over traditional education. This is because online learning does not require commuting, student residence, or a hostel, and people in hectic jobs also find it a convenient learning mode (Behzadi & Ghaffari, 2011). A student can access the learning space from far away through the internet and a smart device. Meanwhile, for campus-based traditional learning, there are many requirements, such as commuting, hotel or dorm rooms for remote areas students, and relatively extra time than online learning, which makes it difficult for underprivileged people and working adults to attend classes.
* Total Cost of Education
Online education requires less expense than that of traditional education. This is because distance learning eliminates the cost of commuting, hotel rent, and purchase of other study materials. In contrast, traditional campus-based education requires expense to fulfil the requirements of campus life (Behzadi & Ghaffari, 2011). Thus, this is one of the reasons for the rising prominence of distance learning among the middle-class strata of society.
* Interaction between Students
Traditional education brings students from different areas, or even from countries, together under a single classroom roof. Face-to-face interactions between students develop their interpersonal skills (Nakata et al., 2022). Students who indulge in dynamic group discussions and collaborate in group tasks are seen to develop good communication skills. However, onl...
