Introduction
The Tarahumara tribe is famous for its running culture. There are about 100,000 people inhabit the highlands of Mexico's Sierra Madre Occidental, with some living in Sierra Madle at Las Barrancas. They do a lot of physical exercises to perfect their running, which starts when one is young. However, running is part of their culture, defining their identities and way of life. The paper critically looks at how they withstand hardship in their running culture.
A Way of Life
Running defines Tarahumara's way of life. Children are taught to run at a tender age to prepare them for different roles. For example, their environment is surrounded by rivers, gorges, and long distances to the neighborhoods, and hurting culture requires one to run. Their method of hurting requires chasing the animal to exhaustion rather than using arrows (“Culture and History | Milwaukee Public Museum,” n.d.). Running is a source of enjoyment and also a way of survival.
Tradition and Spirituality
Running plays a traditional role and also a spiritual role. Running is associated with men's and women's footraces, and both types of running are considered effective forms of prayer when done during hunting. Running long distances has a connection to endurance dances, which have significant spiritual aspects.
