Research Proposal Instructions:
A research is intended to illustrate that you have a worthwhile research project and that you have the work-plan to complete it. Please make sure the topic you choose for your paper relates to immigration law and policy. This is not an international law course- so keep your paper focused on immigration law topics. A paper on “immigration reform” is too vague. Be sure your topic is specific and relevant to the course material. It might be a good idea to review the content now and the links they contain to get an idea of where you want to concentrate your research.
Your research proposal should contain all key elements involved in the research process and include sufficient information for me to evaluate the proposed study.
Regardless of your research area and the methodology you choose, all research proposals must address the following questions:
a. What is your topic?
b. What is your thesis? What do you plan to prove or illustrate in your paper?
c. Why you want to write on this topic?
d. How you are going to do it? For example, will you use case law, law review articles, journals, books, etc. Specifically, list the Bluebook citations for at least four (4) resources to you intend to use.
Please be as specific as possible in this proposal. This assignment will give you a good foundation to use to start the process of research, outlining and writing your paper.

Background of the Research Project
The United States is indisputably the primary destination for immigrants, with a yearly influx of about one million legal immigrants and approximately seven hundred thousand undocumented immigrants. The estimated range for the number of undocumented immigrants residing in the United States is between 10.5 million and 12 million, which accounts for around 3.2% to 3.6% of the total population (Kamarck & Stenglein, 2019). Several nations react by strengthening their boundaries. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the impact of immigration policy on National Security and public perception.
According to Briggs and Solodoch (2023), border controls, typically seen as emblems of limitation and seclusion, can promote immigration. The inclusion of refugees, skilled workers, and people seeking a new life in the US shows the complexity of the immigration system. The United States is dedicated to protecting its borders and controlling the individuals who enter the country through an ongoing evaluation and enhancement of its immigration policy to ensure the safety of its inhabitants (Kamarck & Stenglein, 2019). Immigration regulations play a crucial role in protecting and ensuring national security by regulating border surveillance, thereby serving as a proactive approach to avert future threats (Massey, 2020). These issues are closely connected to public opinion and are subject to political discussions, shaping how people perceive their country's values and identity.
