1 Irony, hyperbole, sarcasm and humor
The use of irony highlights the differences between the reality and expectations where there is a humorous effect. In chapter 20 of White Noise, (p.58) and Jack debates whether humans are like rats and the classification of animals and cockroaches. There is also hyperbole in the second part of the book as DeLillo mentions the ‘cosmic force’ that is very powerful and threatens all life and is created by willful rhythms (p. 59). Hyperbole exaggerates features and characteristics, and even goes beyond the literal meaning.
There is also sarcasm, where Babette sarcastically asked her daughter Denise whether all they were learning was about contamination rather than civics, bills becoming laws, mathematics and history (chapter 23, p. 78). In the chapter, Babette implies that she believes Heinrich is not learning anything useful unlike during their time. However, this is ironical as the area had been affected by Nyodene contamination and Heinrich was well informed about the poisonous gas. To Babette, Heinrich was being exposed to dark scientific facts such as dangerous radiation that were not useful in real life. DeLillo uses humor in the novel and mentions that during a disaster it is necessary to be close to the right-wing fringe groups since they prepare to stay alive during emergencies (p. 72). Even as the author rightfully mentions that these groups are some of the best prepared for disasters, in reality they are not always formed for noble causes.
