Title of the Assignment: Southwest Research Paper
Introduction
Southwest is one of the leading airline companies with a globally recognized reputation for outstanding services and impacts. The company has operated since 1971, when it commenced operations with only three Boeing 737s operating in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. However, it has grown consistently as a leading provider of scheduled transportation services in the United States, reaching a fleet of 817 aircraft and serving over 121 destinations in more than 42 regions nationwide and beyond by the end of 2023 (Southwest, 1). The firm has strategically positioned itself as a competitive enterprise with the wide routes it covers, attractive fares for its clients, and outstanding hospitality. Such aspects have contributed significantly to its recognition by different stakeholders in the airline industry. Thus, this paper explores Southwest’s operational strategies, the effect of its management activities on the customers’ experiences, its value chain’s effectiveness, performance measurements, and the emerging technologies that distinguish the company.
Competitive Advantage
Southwest’s ingenuity in prioritizing cost discipline and differentiating services is a progressive operational strategy that has enabled this organization to boost its competitiveness and improve sustainability. For instance, the route structure embraced by the company’s management displays this cost discipline and leadership principle. Southwest (1) indicates that replacing the popular “hub-and-spoke” approach commonplace among other competitors with the “point-to-point” method in providing its services enables the company to meet all its customers’ traveling needs without the extra expenses of connecting needs. Such a method favors increased direct flights, leading to operational reliability. As a result, the company has become more competitive than other airlines nationwide.
The firm’s focus on specific aircraft types has also transformed its operational costs, contributing to its sustainability. For instance, Southwest relies on Boeing 737s and continuously modernizes its fleet to maintain optimum fuel efficiency and minimal carbon emissions (Southwest, 2). In 2023, it demonstrated this approach by introducing 86 new aircraft with modern technologies while retiring 39 of the older, less fuel-efficient Boeing models to ensure operational costs remain as low as possible (Southwest, 1). It also includes other strategic fuel price fluctuation cautioning tactics, including derivative contracts and fuel hedging initiatives. Besides such efficiency considerations, focusing on Boeing also assists the company in optimizing its maintenance expenditure and the need for varied training of its workers to familiarize themselves with other aircraft models. As a result, such an aspect allows the company to control its operational costs.
Southwest’s diverse operational strategies enable It to provide low and competitive fares for its clients. In this context, the company has four unique fare categories that integrate attractive product benefits (Southwest, 1). Including a flexible payment schedule and eliminating charge fees for flight reservations or cancellations also add to the attractiveness and affordability of the company’s services. It also integrates other ancillary services that add to the quality of the hospitality, including EarlyBird Check-In, pet transportation, and upgraded boarding. Such aspects, plus the distinctive route network, contribute to the convenience of its flights, timeliness, and low-priced fares. As a result, these unique elements have enabled Southwest to become a highly competitive airline company in the U.S.
OM and the Customer
The improved operation management activities that Southwest integrates contribute significantly to the outstanding customer experiences that are dominant in the airline. For instance, the exceptional route networks, including roundtrips of up to 12 weekdays between different cities, improve the traveling experience by combining low fares with convenience and timeliness (Southwest, 1). Customers yearn for such treatment and progress-designed flight schedules due to the satisfaction that they induce. However, flight operations can also trigger challenges such as delays. In this context, Southwest has established robust intervention measures while collaborating with other stakeholders, including the FAA, to avert such issues ...
