Section 1: Question: What Should be a Christian Response to Abortion?
In the current world, religious organizations have raised concerns about whether women should carry out abortions. They tend to believe that abortion is a sin before God because it results in the killing of the unborn baby. However, they also admit that there are instances when abortions can be allowed; in cases whereby the mother experiences complications during pregnancy, which would cause her death or the death of the child. Moreover, some women undergo gang rape; they chose to execute abortion, to remove the traumatizing experiences from their memories. Inappropriately, Christians consider that the latter is not a significant reason why women should abort because, although they were raped, raising the child is much better, because the Child’s life is God-ordained. Fortunately, recent technologies have enabled victims of rape and incest to undergo medication within the first 72 hours. The medication helps in curing any infection and preventing a pregnancy from occurring.
Section 2: Defense
Boyle explains that the Christian Reformed Church acknowledges that human beings bear the image of God, and affirms that each human life has its unique value. The church is usually mindful of the sixth commandment that states that no one should murder. As a result, the church condemns the arbitrary or wanton destruction of human life at any stage of its development, from the conception stage to its death. According to the church, any induced abortion can only be allowed when the mother’s life is threatened genuinely by the pregnancy (Boyle). Therefore, the church requests Christians to show compassion and provide support to women and teenagers experiencing unwanted pregnancies, and to individuals who have carried out abortions (Gorman). Moreover, it calls Christians to speak out against abortion atrocity, and enhance legislation and action that reflect the scripture teaching about human life sanctity and denounce all violence against people who execute abortion.
The following are thesis statements for the four parts of evidence.
* People should not execute abortion because it is a sin before God.
* Abortion violates the 6th commandment that states, “though shall not murder.” Therefore, people should not abort because it results in the killing of the infant child.
* Some women held the perception that abortion should be executed on infants with disabilities. However, it is essential to note that God created human beings in his image and according to his divine purpose. Therefore, it is not their responsibility to decide who must live and who should die.
* Although not all abortions are performed for selfish reasons, people need to have an intimate relationship with God.
Christians should always base their faith and life on the word of God. Although people cannot scientifically substantiate the beginning of life, the Bible, which is the word of God, states that God created all things, and He is the giver of life (Fitzgerald). For instance, Adam, when created by God, He was not alive until God breathed the breath of life into his nostrils. Similarly, it is not the chemical combination that gives life to infants, but God’s breathe into the fetus and no one who can provide evidence when it happens. According to Fitzgerald, it should be noted that life is inviolable, pure, and holy, and every person should respect it the way they respect God who is the giver of life. The entire bible expounds that God is all-knowing, and He knew each life and every person even before they were born. It is not only that God knew every person before they existed, but also that He has a divine purpose with their lives. As indicated in Psalm 139:13-16, God formed our inward parts and covered us in our mother’s womb. Therefore, we will praise Him for we are ‘beautifully and wonderfully made’. Marvelous are His works, and our souls know very well. Our frames were not hidden from him when we were made in secret and skillfully fashioned in the deepest parts of the earth. His eyes saw our substance when we were not yet formed, and all the days fashioned for us are written in his book.
Oppenheimer posits that many people decide to procure abortions for different reasons. Although abortion has been performed in all societies throughout history, the changing cultural norms and medical improvements in the contemporary world has made abortion a more ‘acceptable’ and accessible option than in the earlier decades. Selfish or logical reasons are the primary motives that cause people to execute abortions. For example, it is socially unacceptable for parents who claim that they are unable to raise another child to execute abortion (Oppenheimer). Unfortunately, it is not our mandate to take life, because God’s word in Exodus 20:13 clearly states that ‘you shall not murder’. Therefore, terminating a fetus for logical or selfish reasons is a sin against God and the unborn child. Giving an account before God for terminating a life that he created is not easy. Disobedience of God’s will and law leads to pain and grief, and many people experience deep spiritual and psychological stress after pressuring, performing, or undergoing an abortion. True healing and forgiveness are only obtained through seeking God who is the giver of life. He is a loving and merciful God and gives peace to everyone who seeks Him with a pure and upright heart.
Advancement in technology has enabled medical practitioners to detect abnormalities or disabilities in the fetus at the first stages of development. Some scientists argue that fetuses with clear abnormalities can never have full lives (Gorman). Therefore, according to them, the most reasonable and kindest thing to do is to terminate the pregnancy. However, the B...
