Truth: Absolute or Relative?
First Part: Is truth absolute or relative?
The world today is different from the situation in the past. Nowadays, people rely on themselves, and they are so sufficient that they have forgotten about the role of God in their lives. They have adopted a mentality that they are entitled to do and be whatever they choose without answering to anyone. There is a difference between absolute and relative truth. The definition is that when something is absolute, it is free from any limitations, qualification, condition or restriction. On the other hand, something that is relative is dependent upon external conditions, and it is not independent. This apologetics research paper serves to demonstrate whether truth should be termed as absolute or relative. Essentially, it will compare the views of Christianity and secular humanism on the matter, while paying attention to the sense that the Christian Worldview is the central point of reference. Secular humanists state that truth is absolute, and that one creates his or her truth. The point of relativists requires a viable defence because it challenges the perceptions of Christianity and does not give security, hope, or eternal life.
Second Part: Defense
Christianity, as a religion and a belief, assesses its origin and recognizes that man is comprised of three different parts: spirit, body, and soul. Christians do not rely on themselves but the Trinity (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit) and the Word of God. To them, truth is absolute. Again, the Trinity, and the existence of God, is the proof. With these, they do not have to go through this world alone because they have aid (Fernando 17). The Trinity and the Word of God build and strengthen their faith in Christians. Basically, the whole religion and belief are based on the principles and instructions written in the Bible. The Word has proven itself to be absolute and concrete in its content, context, and history. One of the main pillars that have held Christianity through the issues and time is the faith of the believers. The question of whether truth is absolute or relative is still one of the concerns of Christians. However, the following four points explain why Christianity asserts that truth is absolute.
1 Christians state and believe in an absolute truth that man lives in three different forms: spirit, body, and soul.
God created human beings from the dust of the ground. One of the numerous responsibilities of human beings is to feed and sustain their bodies using food that grows on the field of which they have been placed. As they continue to consume the food that God provides for them, they strengthen their connection with all the other creations of God. Equally important, when God created man, he breathed the spirit of life into his nostrils. Kitcher states that the spirit of God is what keeps the contact between him and the best of his creations (24). Before being cast out of the Garden of Eden, the man never activated his living soul until the spirit of God was alive within him. Therefore, the soul is the life of a man, and it originated from the union of body and soul. The soul maintains and reinforces the connection between people because they serve one being.
All the explanations on this point are products of absolute truth. They are the truth that does not have any shortcomings because they are there, they are real, and nobody can doubt or question them. There are other forms of absolute truth that human beings cannot deny. The sense that earth is spherical and that there is gravity, cannot be argued and they will never change. Joseph asserts that the Christian view of the presence of the body, spirit, and soul is the one that teaches people of the absolute truth (162). In the environment of a church or any other sacred Christian belief, these truths are independent, and one can only discover them spiritually or through experience and intellect. Prophet Jacob said that "the Spirit speaketh the truth. … Wherefore, it speaketh of things as they are, and of things as they really will be." (Jacob 4:13.)
2 Christians require the Trinity (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit) and the Word of God to lead a holy and acceptable life on earth.
Religious beliefs state that absolute truth is not just given to those who seek it, but it is found and earned by Christians through their experiences. The only experience that can lead people to the ultimate truth is God. Also, in the struggle to discover absolute truth on earth, human beings are blessed with the guide of the Trinity. Christians believe that Jesus is the only way to find the truth. He says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). In this case, Jesus means that He is the embodiment of truth and reality. The co-existence between Christianity and secular humanism contradict the views of absolute truth. However, the former says that God provides absolute truth. The fact that human beings discover the truth is not accidental, but God's plan.
God reveals himself to human beings through Jesus Christ. He also reveals the truth to the believers through Jesus Christ, in the form of the Holy Spirit. Christians learn about the activities of God through the World of God. There are several writings in the Bible, where Jesus proves the existence of absolute truth. He claims that he holds the same position as God when he says, "If you knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him." (John 14:7) From the two readings, it is evident that absolute truth exists because it has grown in the history of life and the person of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that Jesus is God. However, to know God, one has to believe in absolute truth, and believe in Jesus Christ. Generally, human beings require the Holy Trinity to find out the truth and understand the universe and all that is in it.
3 The works of Jesus Christ yield the Christian concepts of life, and it shows that absolute truth gives believers the foundation of hope and faith.
Jesus believed in his abilities and had hope in the help of God. With people's belief in God and their review of the works of Jesus Christ, they are assured of the absolute truth because it is indicated throughout the Bible. When one does not have Jesus Christ and God, it could be difficult to believe in hope and faith, and prove that the Christian Worldview is the prominent point of view (Zukeran 1). Jesus was confident that people would fail to believe him when he made numerous claims about himself. He says, "Believe me when I say I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or at least believe in the evidence of the miracles" (John 14:11).
