This research paper mainly focuses on the water pollution. Water pollution has been rampant in both developed and the developing countries. Water is the source of life and is what gives us the overview of life as a pleasing one. Water pollution is of different kind, caused by different things. According to research, industries are largely responsible in water pollution. Industries as well as waste majorly affect the hydrologic quality and as a result several side effects come with it. Several diseases have risen because of polluted water. However, this paper will also focus on the ways to manage the crisis
Water Pollution
The planet earth consists of the oceanic part and the part that is covered by land. Over two thirds of the earth is covered solely by water (Water, 2003). The rest is covered by land. This shows how the oceanic part is largely significant both to the people and the dependants of water for instance the aquatic life. As the earth population continues to grow, people are putting much pressure on the existing water mass. The inland waters are being squeezed in different ways, as a result pollution comes in when unwanted substances are triggered in. the human activities have been on the increase. These activities are largely run by water or water will take part in the process. Before nineteenth century people lived in harmony with the environment. With the introduction of industrial revolution, though they have greatly supported humans with better life, but have greatly been harm to the environment. One needs to know that with the increase in industrialization, the increase in water pollution comes with it. Developed countries have however been a subject to this pollution. In the ancient time when the population of people in the world was small, no one could ever believe that something like water pollution will be of great concern. At the moment, the world’s population is on the increase since in every hour children are born. An increase in the population triggers the need to preserve the waters in the ocean and in the lake. Now what is water pollution? Water pollution is when something is ingested in the water bodies and the result part of it affects the aquatic life as well as the people present or those using it. Lakes oceans and seas as well as other inland water bodies, can naturally clean up the harmful substances. This is achieved by dispersing the chemical substance or any waste that has been ingested in the water bodies. For instance, when one takes a cup of ink and pours it in the sea waters, it will automatically be dispersed hence causing less harm. The ink will be their but the effect will not be experienced since it is less concentrated. In case where the chemical are triggered in the water bodies, the chemical are easily made less harmful but when a huge amount of chemical is ingested, the effects are experienced through death of aquatic life and rise of various dieses. Thus water pollution is all about the quantity of substance ingested in and how big is the water. A small toxic chemical will have less impact on the sea in case there is leakage but the same amount of toxic substance can lead to various harmful effects in case it is poured in a small lake. This research paper will mainly focus on the types of water pollution, the causes of water pollution, and the effects that come with polluted water, and ways to reduce water pollution
Types of water pollution
When people talk about water resources, mostly the major their mind on the huge oceans, lakes and seas. However you should note that these are sources water. We also have ground water. The most widely spread water pollution is the spill of oil in oceans and lakes. This type of spillage greatly affects a large area in the sea or ocean. Our major focus will be on the ground water pollution. Not all the planets water is on the surface. A great amount of water is in the rock strata and underground rock structures called aquifers which human beings have not been able to put into consideration (Magdalena, pg 175-182). The waters stored underground in the aquifers are called ground water which are responsible in feeding rivers found on the land as well as the drinking water that human beings consume or use (Ana-Maria, pg 5-13). How can the ground water be polluted? When farmers use weed killer, the probability of it to drain in the ground is high. When such chemical drains in the ground, the elements of water that is collected in the underground can be greatly affected (Woodford, 2017). In 1996, a research in Lowa in the United States found that over fifty percent of states ground water is affected by weed killer especially in the wells. Surface water and ground water are majorly the resources that are polluted
. There are two types or ways of polluting: when a pipe or discharges from the industries or factories are connected to the outlet in a river, it is known as point-source pollution. Other examples of the same are oil spillage from tanks and chimney that emits the factory wastes. The second happens when a great deal of pollution happens not only from a single source u a multiple source. This is called non-point pollution. When point-source pollution is experienced only the immediate environment and people around it are the ones affected. This includes the inland waters for Instance Rivers and lakes. For instance in surface water, when there is an oil spillage from tanks or a tanker accidentally pours the entire oil in the ocean the environment around is affected and the effects are experienced to the immediate. However non-point pollution comes in when the oil leak affects the environment in various ways. When pollution is experienced in many ways the immediate reaction and effects is of great concern. As much as water pollution can be of different type, there is a minor type that also is a concern. In cases where there is a certain type of pollution but the effects is experienced to other parts, or pollution that causes a large side effect also to those not nearby is called Trans-boundary pollution. Such cases are rampart in areas where factories use chimneys and lakes as a discharge point. One clear example is the radioactive waste from nuclear processing plants in France and England to the immediate countries that border them.
Causes of water pollution
Water pollution majorly is from man’s activities on the land. Take for instance, the seas and lakes are polluted by several mans activities. Research shows that, eighty percent of the ocean pollution originates from land activities. When farmers use the fertilizer and other chemicals for the growth of plants, drainage of this chemical is directed to the water bodies. This process of drainage washes away the chemical components in the fertilizer. These chemicals are in turn directed to the nearby river hence causing water pollution. Toxic smoke when emitted up to the atmosphere, condenses with moisture present, and comes back in form of the rain (Antoenela, pg 44-51). During rainfall, water accumulates in rivers, seas, oceans, and lakes which result to water pollution. This is known as atmospheric deposition. However, apart from the above mentioned causes, there several elements that also contributes to water pollution.
Sewage
Billions of people dispose sewage waste. This is a great problem to the human race. According to the World’s Health Organization in 2015 and 2016; nine percent of the population in the world is not subjected to safe water drinking, with 2.4 billion of people without proper sanitation. Although there has been a great struggle in provincial of safe drinking water but the less focus has been on the sanitation. Proper sanitation include, clean toilets, and hygienic environment. Sewage disposal is a cause of pollution that affects the immediate environment. Diseases emerge in case there is improper drainage of the sewage. For instance Diarrhea, which according to research, has contributed to the death of over five hundred thousand children in every year. However, the diseases that are water related can be avoided by proper sanitation. Sewage is one of the mail causes of water pollution in the world. In developed countries, people use flash toilets.
