Space Design and Sustainability Research Assignment

Research Paper Instructions:

Using your proposal to prepare an interesting, well-researched, well-written essay. Use

the sources you listed in your annotated bibliography (and any other scholarly sources

that you have found) to support your arguments.

Requirements:

5-6 page research essay in Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double spaced, that conforms

to proper MLA format. It should include a Works Cited page with the complete

bibliographic information of all sources you considered.

In-class peer review of first drafts will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 29th. Bring two

printed copies

You will be graded on:

• The clarity of your argument.

• The length – it should not be longer or shorter than the 5-6 page range by more

than a half a page.

• Your sources – I will be checking to see that you have chosen academic sources

(rather than Wikipedia) and that you have at least three. By academic sources I

mean a scholarly, peer-reviewed article or book. Websites, newspaper articles,

blogs etc. will not be accepted. You may use one article from the course-pack as

a source if you wish.

• Your ability to use correct MLA format.

• Grammar and Syntax.

Please use the proposal and three sources that I uploaded, you may also add one more scholarly peer-reviewed article as resources.

Space Design and Sustainability
Background
The world in its current system faces a lot of challenges. Pollution happens to be one of the causes of these problems. There is pollution from industries that discharge their harmful wastes to the environment, air, water, and land, thus exposing the living things to a lot of health hazards. Overcrowding in the urban centers, overutilization of natural resources and invertible damage to the natural ecosystem, are some of the negative impacts of pollution and other hazards to the environment. They have led to the destruction of the ozone layer, which has contributed to the greenhouse effect.
Space design is a remedial method that assists in finding solutions to these problems and prevents or stops the long-term destruction of the universe. It involves measuring the rate of environmental destruction of the natural ecosystem and developing methods that can be used to minimize the damage. However, it is essential for the space design to be sustainable. Sustainable space design involves making development decisions which reflect on the people’s attempt to pursue environmental protection, health, and low-carbon in the atmosphere. The theme of the paper is an attempt to cover the gap between space design and sustainability by ranking and integrating all the housing sustainability index of rural and urban centers. It is a responsive approach that guarantees improvement in the maintenance of the world, and creating a suitable environment for the future generation. It protects the ecosystem from degradation and ensures that plants, animals and human beings are protected from the different health hazards that they are currently exposed to due to pollution, congestion, overutilization of natural resources and invertible damage to the natural ecosystem (Wu, Jianguo and Tong Wu 212).
The Need for Sustainable Space Design
Environmental problems are the major issues that affect the growth and development of many countries around the globe. Sustainable design has been the major idea of an attempt to restore the balance and health standards of the ecosystem. There has been a need to establish a consumerism control that does not affect the quality and quantity of the natural resources that are available for use by the human beings. It is estimated that in the developed world, almost ninety percent of the people will live their lives indoors (Wu, Jianguo and Tong Wu 217). They would benefit from the sustainable space design. There are different benefits of sustainable space design.
First, it lowers the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In the recent past, the amount of carbon particles has increased in the atmosphere due to human activities like industrial processes. However, methods of sustainable design like recycling and reusing are by far helping in the reduction of carbon discharge to the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is currently the primary cause of global warming as it clots the ozone layer (Wu, Jianguo and Tong Wu 224).
It promotes water conservation. It is estimated that freshwater makes almost 1% of the total water on the planet. There are about seven billion people in the universe. Sixty-six percent of water is used for agricultural purposes. Only about thirty percent of the world’s fresh water is available for human consumption (Ahern1206). That means, if water conservation methods are not applied, the world can run out of the fresh water. Collection of rainwater is also another method that can be used to boost the availability of water.
Next, the sustainable space design ensures energy efficiency. When energy efficiency is high, there are reduced bills, reduced pollution, and reduced emission of carbon dioxide and high conservation of the natural resources. Energy is the driving force to most of the processes in the world. Example, in Europe, there is a passive house process that was developed through superinsulation. It was designed to reduce the rates and costs of heating and cooling by about ninety percent (Ahern 1211).
Lastly, the sustainable space design improves indoor air quality. Human health is dependent on the air we breathe in. The green interior design has been a technique in the space design that has been used to improve the quality of air available for breathing process. It purifies air and removes all the impurities including smoke, smog and dust particles that affect the human system and cause a lot of harmful health hazards to people.
Sustainable Space Design Process
Space design is not an easy approach. It involves a series of stages that are applied to ensure sustainability of the final output. All stakeholders in the space design process must ensure that they identify all the sustainability objectives and also identify the issues that cause an imbalance in the natural ecosystem. There are five main steps in the space design process. The first step is planning. At this stage, the stakeholders identify the gap or the causes of particular health hazards to the atmosphere. Planning involves research and availing all the needed resources that will be used later in the implementation process. Planning allows the participants to set objectives, especially the one...
