Should the Marijuana Be Legalized in the US?
Marijuana, also known as cannabis or weed, is the most abused and controversial drugs in the United State and across the world. The marijuana was first found in Asia, then spread out to the Europe and America. In that period, the marijuana was used to make clothing, paper, sails and rope, and its seeds were used as food. There early marijuana had very low effects to human brain because of low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Eventually, people noticed that using marijuana can also get one drug, a feeling that is perceived to be good and addictive. Therefore, the more frequently the use of marijuana has occurred can in turn be related to the increased number of criminal activities in the US. In this case, the marijuana had a pretty bad reputation. Lots of people believed that the marijuana has nothing good, but was instead hurting people. Through the history, the discovering of marijuana had led to the debates over whether marijuana should be legalized or not. Even nowadays, the legalization of marijuana is still controversial since it was commonly appeared in the society. In some states, the marijuana had already been legalized by medical uses, but not totally legalized in the whole country. In the phrase stated by President Obama: “Look, I’ve been very clear about my belief that we should try to discourage substance abuse,” Obama said. “And I am not somebody who believes that legalization is a panacea. But I do believe that treating this as a public-health issue, the same way we do with cigarettes or alcohol, is the much smarter way to deal with it” (President Obama, 2014). President Obama stands his position that he thinks we should treat marijuana as same as cigarettes and alcohols. Therefore, through some researches and consideration of both good sides and bad sides of the using of marijuana, I think the marijuana should be legalize”
Marijuana is much safer than the tobacco, alcohol, and drugs that have already been legalized. According to the News from NBC, the Scientific Reports by Dirk Lachenmeier and Jürgen Rehm who investigated and comapred10 different, recreational drugs. Among them is marijuana, alcohol, tobacco, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, methamphetamine, diazepam, amphetamine and methadone. It comes up with a statement that the marijuana has the least dangerous effects to the human body. They also state that “the risk associated with marijuana was approximately 114 times less than the alcohol.” The data shown by the reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that more than 88,000 U.S. deaths per year due to the alcohol poisoning, 480,000 people die every year from smoking-related illnesses and 16 million people are currently living with a disease caused by smoking (Searles, the Free Press). Compared with the death caused by using of marijuana, which are more less than alcohol where CDC doesn’t have a specific data. "You can die binge-drinking five minutes after you've been exposed to alcohol. That isn't going to happen with marijuana," said by Ruben Baler, a health scientist at the National Institute on Drug Abuse. "The impact of marijuana use is much subtler"(Brownstein, Live Science). In the other words, drinking alcohol has greater chance to die, and marijuana has less chance to cause death. In the short-term health effects, over drinking alcohol can easily kill a person; especially when you taking drugs or medications while drinking alcohol. Also, over-drinking alcohol has greater possibility than marijuana to make people addictive. Meanwhile, smoking tobaccos will cause addictive and breathing problem and etc. In the other hand, marijuana won’t cause such problems. In the long-term health effects, alcohol and tobaccos both increase the development of cancers which can caused death. And that would not happen when taking marijuana, at least there has no any specific data shows that. Marijuana also can contribute to the medical science field.
Marijuana can be used as medicines and works well. Currently, forty-four states and the District of Columbia passed the laws to legalize the use of marijuana for medical use; and seven of them allows marijuana for recreational use. The scientific studied of the chemicals inside the marijuana are called cannabinoids, and these chemicals helped treat a range of illness and symptoms. In other words, the marijuana contains two main cannabinoids: THC and CBD, where THC can reduce nausea in order to decrease pain, inflammation and muscle problem. Same as CBD, which helped to decrease pain and inflammation, controlling epileptic seizures and mental illness and addictions. Also, the medical marijuana can help to kill certain cancer cells or reduces the size of cancer cells, and help to slow down the growth of the cancer cells from brain tumors. The medical marijuana also helped to treat symptoms such as, HIV/AIDS, seizures, substance use disorders and etc. (NIH, Marijuana as Medicine). Therefore, in a case whereby marijuana has been legalized, it is possible that this will greatly reduce the cost of producing drugs that can use a similar ingredient. As a result, the saved amount of money can be used in other sectors of the economy such as foster care and the police department to ensure maximum security within the country. As well, the manufactured drugs will play a substantial role in saving the lives of many people and in the reduction of the dependence ratio. In turn, this will be reflected in the economy because a healthy person is able to work effectively and raise their standard of living level.
The legalization of marijuana will increase the economy in the US as well. The marijuana is still illegal in many states in the US by law. Even although the law states that the illegal of marijuana, it still can’t stop people with desires. They will try their best to inventive ways to have marijuana. Therefore, the transactions of marijuana are mostly under table, which means that people buy the marijuana from the sellers and tried to avoid the notices by the government. Because the transactions are under table, the selling of marijuana were not reported to the government, which will not help to increase the U.S. economy by it has no effects to the gross domestic products(GDP). If the marijuana is legalizing, that means more industries will be open. The new opening of the industries means more jobs are created for people, and require more farmers to grow marijuana. The more people working means more products they want to buy, which will boost the economy as well. Also, the legalization of marijuana will help to grow the economy by taxing the marijuana. The report, “The budgetary Implications of Marijuana Prohibition” by Professor Jeffrey A. Miron. It shows that the legalization of marijuana would approximately save $7.7 billion per year in state and the federal expenditures by taxing the marijuana. Meanwhile, the legalizing of the marijuana will reduce the spending on marijuana prohibition by government. According to the ACLU, the U.S. spent more than $3.6 billion on enforcing cannabis prohibition. In other words, the legalization of marijuana would save lots of money for government. That money will be very useful in the various states. Correction facilities have recorded a very large increase in the amount of money spent within that sector. Among the liabilities is small cases of street drug dealers and this can be avoided by legalizing marijuana. As a result, teenagers will not waste most...
