Introduction
Ever since the beginning of modern day civilizations, learning institutions have always been present and dedicated to teaching the youth in order to become a functional member of the society. In doing this, these institutions could not be static and must be able to change in order to cater to the evolving needs of the greater community. As of today, this evolution changes in terms of the shape, size, and even the space that learning institutions occupy, since a more and more of these are channeling educational efforts through digital means. These online institutions are usually called as e-learning, while those which operate through physical means are called the classroom setting. Nevertheless, despite the growing influence and subscription of e-learning systems, the importance and efficiency of the traditional classroom-setting are still apparent since it allows the physical and social development of a child. However, despite being centuries-old, the technicalities of the classroom setting and how making it more efficient and practical is still being debated. Perhaps, one of the greatest debates is on the cost-effectiveness of implementing “dress-codes” or “uniforms” in the school, in relation to the students learning efficiency, practicality, and experience. In this article, the author would like to discuss this debate, as well as the pros and cons of having a school uniform in today’s classroom setting. He believes that in contrast to the disadvantages, the advantages of not having a singular dress code are much more important in today’s context in the sense that it gives the students “academic freedom” and expression, which are very important traits in order to efficiently benefit the greater society. Thus, in the next section, the different perspectives would first be discussed in order to show the different arguments presented by the opposing sides. In the following section, the author would also try to zero-down on different perspectives given by three different authors and provide an evaluation of their own perspectives to analyze their usefulness, and integrate them into this study.
The Debate
The debate between the efficiency of school uniforms in relation to the child’s learning experience is split into two. On one hand, supporters of the use of school uniforms argue that by using a singular dress code, students could focus more on learning and conducting the tasks at hand, rather than thinking about what they should wear for tomorrow. Aside from this, school uniforms are regarded as one most effective tools in order to generate order, discipline and a greater sense of community amongst students since the similarity that they present makes them feel more “in with a group” (Schlauch). These, plus other practical benefits, such as the lower cost of dressing and time for procuring the dress, are some of the main arguments presented by those who believe that school uniforms are essential in the school setting. On the other hand, those who don’t believe that uniforms are necessary, argues that uniforms pose a number of threats to the security and expression of students. According to Ordway, one of the disadvantages of having a singular dress code is that it prevents self-expression for students.
