Arguing From Personal Experience
Students go through a learning experience in a setting that shapes them for larger national issues ahead of them. Educational experiences may seem as school thing but they shape the student and prepare them for the real world. A school setting involves a lot of things that reflect the real world. Students interact with fellow students of varying ages and different cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. With all this diversity come different mindsets and opinions that are different from one student to the other. Students are also under supervision and control of their teachers all the time they are at school. But on the other hand, students may have to go out of their comfort zones to learn something extra or something new that they did not even want to learn. This happens with different schools having different curriculum especially when students transfer from state school to another state school. For this reason, every student has an educational experience that shapes him or her and grows them as a person. This paper will address a personal educational experience that is connected to an issue of larger cultural importance.
As a student I experienced a lot of educational experiences that shaped me as an individual and prepared me for the issues that are out here in the community. Educational experiences prepared me for social, cultural and economic issues that I now experience in the community. But the experience that always shaped and prepared me and which I consider very important is learning of multiple languages. Learning of multiple languages at the same time is a very demanding task and it needs a lot of commitment. Learning a second and third language at the same brings a certain element of confusion and feeling of tiredness that may drain the learner to a certain level that a student may feel the need to drop some and pursue the other. I remember when I first joined my new school, I was fluent in English but I was supposed to learn Spanish and French at the same time.
This was a very crucial time in my education experience and it was very intense. I felt that it was too much for me. Sometimes I dint see the need for learning all this at the same time since it was confusing and tiresome. My parents were supportive of the idea and they were always advising me to work hard and enjoy the experience. My teachers were very good at teaching and they made it as enjoyable as they could. They always encouraged us through the intense curriculum because it was important, they used to say. As students, it was a hard moment especially for me who had come in from a school that never offered teaching other languages.
I lagged behind other students since they were accustomed to the curriculum. I remember one day I threw in the towel, went home and demanded that my parents transfer me from that school. My parents understood my feelings, my struggle but they were determined to ensure that I continued with the classes. They did everything to ensure I went back to school with a determined and more willing mind. I went back and my teachers were always supportive and they talked to me about passed experiences they had had with other students and how the students survived through it.
The lessons involved students from different ethnic backgrounds and so many others struggled too. Therefore, we decided to make study groups that would use to advance our language skills. Our teachers would give us extra assignments that we used in study groups as well as personal homework to help in individual assessment. These study groups were very helpful and influenced my way of thinking after sharing opinions with other students. It was my time to man-up and stop being a crybaby. Actually after some time I started liked this experience and started enjoying it.
The feeling of meeting a French student and talking to then in French and a Spanish student in Spanish was great. Students began enjoying it and talking in different languages at different times and it was fun. As much as it was fun, it was also helping us to get the pronunciations right as well as getting the tenses right too. At the end of school, this was an experience that began on a very unpleasant way, very intense, and very difficult but at the end it was actually very interesting and shaped me as an individual. Students need to learn other languages in school in order to expand their own minds and open up opportunities that may present themselves to them in future.
In the contemporary world, there is a lot of diversity and globalization. Businesses are going global, people of different races are intermarrying and different people are living together in the community. Nowadays, workplace opportunities are more open to people who can speak multiple languages than people who speak a single language. The diversity in the world is demanding that people adapt to the different market trends and globalization and therefore, familiarizing with different languages is the starting point.
