Should Military Service be Mandatory?
Mandatory military service has been a controversial topic. Some people are of the view that military services should be mandatory since they guarantee peace within a country, while the others argue that military officers are responsible for most of the conflicts because they are always into finding ways to protect their own country, and thus, create problems for the neighboring states. This leads us to the question: should military services be mandatory? According to Moshe Israelashvili and Orit Wegman-Rozi, the world saw a major economic crisis in the form of the Great Depression. In the 1930s, the United States was having plenty of problems, unemployment being the major one. A large number of people were left helpless, jobless and homeless, and there was no safety of their wealth and lives (Israelashvili & Wegman-Rozi 175). The government first introduced conscription in the country during the Civil War, and there were only a few military officers performing their duties. With the passage of time, the United States realized that without military forces, its survival would not be possible. The fact is that military service is the best way to ensure the sustainability and protection of citizens. With an increased number of massacres across the globe, the military service has become mandatory for every state.
It Promotes National Unity
Military service should be mandatory because it promotes national unity in a number of ways. For example, it allows citizens to receive the basic training, helps them feel safe and secure, boosts their self-confidence, creates an environment of peace and harmony, and ensures the protection of the entire nation. The United Kingdom has one of the best and most powerful aircraft carriers; in addition, they have over 920 aircraft and of course, an active duty military of over 200,000 people. In this part of the world, youngsters are encouraged to join the military right after the completion of their studies. According to Danko Tarabar and Joshua C. Hall, the UK has a small overall navy for an island nation, with only 70 ships and up to 300 tanks, which they should pay immediate attention to (Tarabar & Hall 55).
Similarly, in Germany, national unity is promoted through sustainable and powerful military service. This country has over 800 aircraft, nearly 7,000 armored vehicles, and up to 200,000 well-trained troops. The government tries its best to cope up with internal and external conflicts whenever they arise (Maoz, et al. 558). For this purpose, awareness is created among the public regarding the worth of military service. The one thing Germany has to pay attention to is that it lacks a significant number of power project platforms, such as carriers. If people are introduced to military officers in all parts of the world, especially in the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, it will be easy for them to understand and appreciate their struggles, sacrifices, and efforts (Bettwy 21). In simple words, it can be said that a peaceful environment can be created and people can be encouraged to work in collaboration with military officers in order to deal with political and cultural threats.
It Maintains Active Military Force
Having compulsory conscription to the military means having a good number of active army officers who are always ready to sacrifice their lives for the betterment and prosperity of the country. In almost all parts of the world, where the military officers remain active and perform multiple tasks at a time, people are promised a friendly atmosphere. In case the military officers are insufficient in number, it may not be possible for the government to reduce the number of crimes across the country (Maoz, et al. 559). For example, in Italy, there are only two small aircraft carriers. However, the country has a lot of helicopters and up to 270,000 active troops, allowing the country to push a significant force around the globe. Its military officers are equipped with state-of-the-art armored vehicles and weapons (Bettwy 135). The only problem Italy has is the shortage of tanks. There are only 300 tanks, and ships are lesser than 200; this hurts its ranking to an extent. Despite this shortage, military officers of this country are known for their hard work, dedication, bravery, and courage, and this is what makes them distinctive all over the world.
Compared to Italy, the French military has around 400,000 active people and up to 185,000 in reserve. It means this country has focused more on strengthening its military than anything else (Tarabar & Hall 61). In both France and Italy, the military service is mandatory; in fact, every citizen is encouraged to participate in conversations related to finding solutions to internal or external problems. For this purpose, they can participate in online surveys or can personally join the military. The fact is that military officers in these two countries remain active. They undertake multiple security-related tasks, divide themselves into groups, and perform their duties 24/7 without any excuse. They rely on both tanks and armed fighting vehicles while doing their job.
It Promises High Level of Governmental Participation
According to Hagai Maoz and team, every citizen, whether he belongs to the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Turkey, China or India, is required to play his role in creating a peaceful environment within the country. Across Europe, there is a rule th...
