Negative Effects of Phones on College Students
Smartphone technology has dominated a significant number of college students. The powerful functionality of phones has impacted the behaviors of most students negatively, such that it's inevitable for the population to stay for an extended period without checking their phones. Although technology aids in higher education studies, the negative impacts outweigh the benefits gained by students from the use of mobile phones. For instance, some students use text messages to communicate with their fellow students during lecture times, and this issue leads to poor concentration. The problem affects the normal functioning of the student's minds as they always focus on their devices at the expense of everything else, including their studies. Smartphone technology has impacted college students negatively, rising attention for society to look for appropriate solutions towards the issue.
Smartphones have harmful effects on the studies of college students. According to (Yu & Conway, 833), While 40% of college students use their mobile phones for studying before texts, the greatest count of 97% uses the devices for social networking. Most students use various social media platforms for interaction and also sending messages as a more natural way for the communication process. The statistic reveals that only a few college students gain educational benefits from their phones (Yu & Conway, 833). In other incidences, some students may choose to play games and watch videos on the devices. The device loses significance as the young adults deviate from studies to concentrate on the other available applications in advanced smartphones (Barnwell). The influence results in poor performance as the students spent the best part of their free time on phones instead of studying. Most of the evident failures in colleges are related to influence by advanced technology and the use of media for social interaction.
Smartphones affect the efficacy of college students towards their studies as the population can't concentrate on their studies well due to the nuisance and the urge to check on social updates. Continuous use of the devices affects the standard attention of the students such that they will always prioritize their phones, and then all the other issues can follow. The irrational decision leads to loss of control in education, the most significant aspect in the lives of young adults. Deviation from expected behaviors to failure in the escalated use of phones is revealed by the rise in the rate of considering the devices important than anything else among college students. The current population battling smartphone addiction in the community has shown a significant increase, 24.8%- 27.8% over a short period (Parasuraman & Subramani et al.). The rate raises the alarm on institutions and parents on how to save the growing generation from this captivity. Continuous use of mobile phones affects the concentration of college students, posing a challenge to their studies. Mobile technology results to decline in academic excellence among many college students as they deviate from spending much time in studies to continuous use of smartphones.
A research conducted by (Lepp, Barkley & Karpinski) gives an example of how the use of mobile phones affects many college students in the United States as the victims can't balance between the use of the gadget and creating time studies. Most of the students find it difficult to choose their homework and classwork over their phones. In other incidences, some students may decide to multi-task the two issues. In this case, such individuals will continue using their phones for social networking while still reading. Unfortunately, the phones take the best time of the student's time, and they acquire little or no academic knowledge by the end of the session (Lepp, Barkley & Karpinski). The advanced smartphones available in the rapidly developing technology of the United States give the gadgets further unique characteristics that attract the quest of the young generation. The students spend most of their time exploring other features in the gadgets, forgetting their role in academic excellence.
Cellphones put the mental health of college students at stake as the use of gadgets causes various health implications for college students. The frequent users experience mental issues from the normality of having the phone throughout. As the current applications in the phones get more interesting, the students spent their resting time on the phones. Also, the students have to adhere to their classes in a fatigued situation due to poor sleeping habits (Pearson, Mack &Namanya). Mobile subscriptions and the cost require substantial amounts of income that college students can't afford and the effort to get the money results to a financial burden on college students in developing countries leading to mental instability as well. In this case, not all students can afford to buy digital phones and also manage the required subscriptions for usage. According to (Pearson, Mack &Namanya), a significant number of students in developing countries don’t have the financial capacity to purchase phones and they borrow from the few who can afford the device. The exhaustion faced in the waiting period leads to health issues originating from the immediate urge of using the device. Some students may even get stressed over the issue of poverty that deprives them of the ownership capacity of phones. Mobile phones yield medical disorders on college students due to the strain in balancing their studies, rest, and the cost in buying and maintenance of the devices.
The other negative effect of mobile phones is the high prevalence of brain tumors on students who communicate for long hours using their phones. The radiation energy released by the phone affects some parts of the ears like the eardrums in the communication processes. (Yan, 4) proves that the impact may not be noticed immediately but the immediate connection between the ears and the brain affects the latter. The issue poses high risks to the victims because health issues in the central nervous system cause severe consequences. The severity of this issue may lead to instability and being in school becomes hard for the victims. This action changes the parents negatively as they incur high costs for the treatment processes of the problem. Prevalent use of cellphones results in brain tumors, leading to high investments in treating the medical condition.
