Museum Paper: San Diego Museum of Arts
I chose to visit the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA), and the experience was insightful and educational. A strategic plan for this facility reveals that the institution has established itself as an informative and enjoyable destination for visitors. The museum has been in existence at Balboa Park, San Diego, since February 1926, when it first became operational as the “Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego” before changing its name to the current one in 1978 (San Diego Museum of Arts, “Strategic Plan” 4). It has gradually transformed itself into an inspiring and educational site.
SDMA provides a platform for upcoming artists to showcase their contemporary pieces while preserving the ancient creations of the art pioneers. For instance, a brief interaction with the history of the place revealed that although its initial objective was housing the region’s municipal art collections, it grew gradually into an establishment that welcomes diversified sculptures and paintings. As a result, it houses collections as old as 5000 BC (San Diego Museum of Arts, “Strategic Plan” 4). Reading the descriptions of the various arts displayed in the museum and interacting with the tour guides confirmed that SDMA has numerous Western artworks but matches them with non-Western ones. For example, it displayed the arts of East, South, and Southeast Asian countries such as India, China, and Japan. Their pieces ranged from those associated with their cultures, early fashions, and religious beliefs and practices. Exposure to such displays was enlightening through increased awareness of the rich global art history.
The museum has categorized and organized its displays in unique ways that assist the visitors to understand their context, historical time, and the artists. It achieves this objective by departmentalizing the arts based on their geographical origin and referring to these areas through distinct exhibition names. In this context, the temple, palace, mosque” represent one of the many exhibits with unique displays that grabbed my attention (San Diego Museum of Arts, “Cultivate Your”). The experience I gained from this section was informative and enabled me to expand my understanding and awareness of the Asian arts. It integrated eye-captivating drawings, sculptures, and paintings that confirmed the diversity in creativity and how it has changed throughout the centuries. As a result, this exhibit was impactful in my historical knowledge.
The approaches employed by SDMA for displaying art are progressive. I noted that the experts in the museum have i...
