Should Education Be Free for Everyone?
Education helps develop human knowledge, skills and evokes creativity whilst giving an individual a new approach to the different challenges he/she encounters in his or her daily life. Education is the tool to fight ignorance and to possess the necessary knowledge to make better decisions. Education is the platform to enhance human civilization as it helps learners to build on the preexisting knowledge to conquer new frontiers. No one today is trying to discover the force of gravity since Sir. Isaac Newton discovered it, and today his discoveries and knowledge are passed along to future generations. The formulae to understand matter in relation to gravity did not need to be recalculated but taught to the learners to equip them with the knowledge to develop more meaningful and important knowledge from what they have learned from the previous generations. Education helps learners to understand our environment, ourselves and the universe. Thus, education should be free because it helps improve the quality of lives, reduces inequality, an efficient tool for fighting bigotry, poverty, terrorism and enhances our understanding of our natural environment.
Education helps humanity improve the quality of each individual’s life. Through education, an individual gets to know other perspectives of approaching a problem and understands the best approach to deal with the problem. A learned individual cannot subscribe to simplistic beliefs held by previous generations but understands the best way to deal with the problem. For example, in the past venesection was a way of treating patients irrespective of their illness and it led to the death of America’s founding father, George W. Washington CITATION Ter10 \l 1033 (Terrell). Many doctors (quacks) of the time believed that bloodletting was a medical procedure that helped patients irrespective of their illnesses. Today, the practice has been proved scientifically that it is ineffective and actually harms the patient. The societal ignorance of the time was because the masses were not educated on better medical therapeutic procedures. Education led to research in the field among others that have found new safer, quicker and more accurate diagnostic tools for patients and today generally the life of all humans has improved and the chance of nearly dying because of ignorant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which are not backed by science reduced to nearly zero. Everyone was a victim of the unproven treatment procedure irrespective of his/her status in the society, but free education could have probably hastened research into the treatment procedure, and this phenomenon would have been dislodged sooner and probably saved more lives. Thus, the education of all people has increased the average knowledge level of all humans, and today everyone has a better understanding of how to lead a relatively better life that a person in similar conditions of a previous generation. Education has been the engine that has been driving away ignorance and helping everyone find new better ways of improving their standards of living. Free education is necessary to improve the general knowledge that can help improve the quality of lives of everyone through better healthcare understanding, better food production methods, better environmental conservation and preservation efforts, better social interactions and integration, better knowledge of our cultures, lives, bodies, etc. Thus, educating the masses for free is for the good of everyone since raising the average knowledge, and skill level would impact everyone directly and indirectly since everyone would be making better-informed decisions that are in the best interest of themselves and of the society.
Education is the most efficient tool to fight poverty and inequality CITATION Jos14 \l 1033 (Kraushaar). Free education levels the ground for those born in privileged families and those who hail from poor backgrounds. If both children can access the same quality of education, they will be able to be equipped equally to lead a better life. The quality of their lives will not be largely dependent on their family backgrounds but on their academic prowess and efforts. Free education would go a long way into reducing inequalities in the society because they are largely caused by family background differences where the rich can afford a better quality of education whilst the poor cannot get the chance to wiggle out of poverty through education. Additionally, free education will help fight poverty because the economy will be flooded by many educated people. An economy and or a country with many educated people are likely to have more startups and entrepreneurial ventures that help to increase the country’s GDPCITATION Jim15 \l 1033 (Jiménez). Secondly, there will be skilled labor to ready to work hence the human resources will not be a bottleneck in the economy of that country/ society. Thus, education is instrumental for the general improvement of the society. The current advantages and innovative products that the current generations enjoy were developed by educated people who overlooked and did not utilize the kn...
