Are there any Benefits of Using Personal Electronic Devices at Work by Hospital Registered Nurses?
The use of personal electronic devices for personal and work-related purposes in healthcare has increased significantly in recent years. More nurses are using their personal electronic devices to locate patient information and communicate with healthcare teams (Jong et al., 2020; VanDusen, 2017; Oh et al., 2017). However, the use of personal electronic devices in the workplace also comes with its share of challenges. These include distraction and interruptions to patient care as well as issues with confidentiality and privacy, among others (Vearrier et al., 2018; VanDusen, 2017). Given the challenges posed by the use of personal electronic devices at work by nurses, this study seeks to explore the benefits of the same to establish whether they outweigh the challenges. The research question is: Are there any benefits of using personal electronic devices at work by hospital registered nurses?
Below is an analysis of quantitative and qualitative articles on the use of personal devices by nurses in the workplace.

McBride, D., LeVasseur, S., & Li, D. (2015). Non-Work-Related Use of Personal Mobile Phones by Hospital Registered Nurses. JMIR Mhealth and Uhealth, 3(1). https://doi.org/10.2196/mhealth.4001
McBride et al. (2015) explored the frequency with which nurses use their personal mobile phones for non-work-related purposes. The study involved members of the Academy of Medical Surgical nurses working in a hospital setting. The researchers employed a quantitative research method and included 825 participants in the study. They found that about 78% of the participants used their personal mobile phones for personal purposes such as sending personal texts/emails, shopping, social media, reading news, and playing games while working.
The researchers used a survey method to collect data where participants completed a web-based questionnaire. The survey instrument that was used by the researchers collected data on four key areas, namely, participants' demographics, use of personal electronic devices, opinions about how the use of personal devices affects nurses' work, and hospital policies related to the use of personal devices while working.
The researchers analyzed data using descriptive statistics. Specifically, measures of frequency such as percentages and counts were used to quantitatively summarize the frequency of personal electronic device usage at work as well as the non-work-related purposes for which the personal electronic devices were used. The demographics of participants were also described using percentages.
The results revealed that 78.1% of participants use personal mobile phones while at work. They also revealed that nurses used personal mobile phones for non-work-related purposes such as sending texts/emails, reading news on online outlets, posting on/ checking social media, online shopping, and playing games, with sending texts/emails being the most common non-work-related activity and playing games being the least common non-work-related activity. The researchers concluded there is frequent use of personal electronic devices for non-work-related purposes among nurses at work because it allows them to maintain connections with their love...
