Research Paper: Personal Philosophy of Leadership Name: Institutional Affiliation: Course: Date: Personal Vision Statement In a world where empathy and compassion are lacking, my vision is to empower and inspire those around me to reach their highest potential. We live in a world where the opportunities to give or receive empathy and compassion are less largely due to the decreased societal interactions, preoccupied generation, online get-togethers, masked conversations, and air-hugs (Leary, M & Hall, J. (2020). Considering the empathy and compassion deficits largely experienced today, I imagine a world where every person not only feels supported but also valued, and through which they can make positive contributions to their lives and society as a whole. As such my vision is to become a leader in my field through which to help drive a ripple effect of empathy, inclusivity, kindness, and growth, thus promoting the creation of a world where individual efforts and differences are celebrated and barriers to growth are dismantled. In this leadership aspiration, the contextual factors considered are equity, diversity, inclusivity, and sustainability, as they work together to enhance balanced growth in current and future generations. Personal Mission Statement My life purpose is to show support and inspire others, thus creating an environment whereby people thrive and succeed at both individual and communal levels. I subscribe to Maya Angelou’s quote, “If you’re going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased” (Schoger, 2023). Based on this, my personal belief is that what counts at the end of all these things including career and general life, is the impact we make on those around us, the relationships we build, and the legacy we leave behind. As such, my goal is to make positive differences in the lives of those around me either directly or indirectly, contribute to the betterment of our community, and build a lasting legacy of kindness, love, and service. As an aspiring leader, my aspirations and styles of leading others directly align with those of servant leadership. Coetzer, Bussin & Geldenhuys (2017) define servant leadership as the multidimensional leadership theory with begins with the desire to serve followed by the intention to not only lead but also develop others so they attain a higher purpose for the greater benefit of individuals, society or an organization (Coetzer, Bussin, & Geldenhuys, 2017). According to Hai & Van (2021), servant leaders direct their motivations toward others and away from self-direction (Hai & Van, 2021).
