Research Paper Instructions:
This paper must be written in APA format, include APA citations throughout, a Reference page and title page. It is required to have a minimum of 3 pages of content. If you have less than is required, please note that there will be significant point deductions. In terms of sources, you must use a minimum of 3 scholarly sources, retrieved from the LTCC College Library Database. If you choose to not use this database, you must send me your sources a minimum of 3 days prior to the deadline for approval. Please note that for full credit on your paper, you must adhere to the guidelines.
In this paper, you will research the role of biology and environment on behavior. You will discuss the following within the body of your paper. The first 2-2.5 pages need to be research, while the final 0.5-1 page will include your personal opinions and recommendations.
RESEARCH PORTION:
• Which mental illnesses are known to be the most "heritable?"
• Which mental illnesses are known to be the least "heritable?"
• How does research explain heredity concerning mental disorders?
• What environmental factors contribute to the acquisition of mental disorders?
• What are protective factors people can take to protect themselves from acquiring a mental disorder, especially those of which have high probability of being passed down?
OPINION PORTION:
• Prior to your research, explain your opinions regarding the biological pass down of mental disorders.
• After your research, do you believe that people with high probability pass down have ways to protect themselves? Explain.
• What types of environmental variables should people with high probability pass down be mindful of to decrease the chances of them eventually getting the disorder?
• How might the diathesis-stress model help in understanding psychopathology?

The Role of Biology in Mental Illness: Critical Analysis Paper
Psychological disorders and their causative factors highlight one of the widely explored areas in mental health research. Researchers such as Bjшrndal et al. (2024) have documented the impact of environmental exposures on disease emergence. Waszczuk et al. (2020) also provide an alternative viewpoint while underlining the indisputable influence of genetics on the mental health spectrum. Such evidence illustrates that while psychological health issues are heritable and environmentally induced, individuals can counter disease development through varied protective factors.
Research Portion
Some mental health illnesses appear to emerge from gene-based factors despite the understanding that environmental and genetic components overlap in the development of psychological health problems. For instance, Waszczuk et al. (2020) reveal that some illnesses, such as bipolar and schizophrenia, rank significantly higher in the genetic architecture with single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association. The authors add that genetic independent influence in diseases such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and schizoaffective (45%) conditions are also significant. In others, including generalized anxiety disorders, heritability accounts for approximately 63% - 85% (Waszczuk et al., 2020). These findings agree with Wright et al.’s (2017) argument that DSM-5 considers specific mental disorders hereditary than others. Thus, such probabilities confirm the ranking of psychological diseases on a heritability scale.
Other psychological disorders remain minimally heritable and often arise from complex environmental interactions. Bjшrndal et al. (2024) list depressive disorders and anxiety as illnesses that require genetic and other lifestyle factors to interact appropriately before manifesting. Waszczuk et al. (2020) add that the genetic contribution in some of these outcomes is as low as 6% and rising to about 15% in social phobia and panic disorder. In this context, the least heritable mental health problems rely slightly on genetic elements that increase susceptibility and disease expression with sufficient environmental contributions. Wright et al. (2017) and Bjшrndal et al. (2024) recognize that exposure to adverse social and environmental situations represents some of the factors that trigger these depressive and anxiety issues. As a result, such aspects reveal that they are less heritable and dependent on gene-environment overlap.
Researchers rely on adoptive and biological families to explain the heredity concept of mental health issues in populations. The evidence by Waszczuk et al. (2020) represents the popular approaches employ...
