Erik Erikson, a key figure in the area of developmental psychology, challenged his peers during his time through his psychosocial development theory. Being raised in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1902, Erik Erikson founded his theory based on Sigmund's works; however, he went a step further with his theories by noting that not only cultural and social factors but environmental factors also affect the development of a human being. Eriksonian theory has a unique characteristic in that it defines the ego identity as the prime outcome of all developmental tasks, as it continues to be worked on and molded as new difficulties and roles are encountered over an individual's life course.
Erikson's theories were built up in the fifties, saying that as one passes through society, one undergoes eight psychosocial stages that end in achieving a mental conflict resolution. Each of those stages affects personal identity and the way how people socialize with each other. Stages are not just a series of problems but create chances for personal advancement and forming a personality and character. The effective cure of psychosocial conflicts can lead to the emergence of virtues and character strengths; in contrast, such failure may trigger psychological weaknesses and the dismemberment of one's identity.
Stages in Erikson’s Theory
1 Trust vs. Mistrust (Infancy, 0-1 year): This stage is about the infant's needs (like food, warmth, and so on) being satisfied by family members. In this final stage of attachment, the child develops safety when the trusted person provides consistent and reliable care.
2 Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt (Early Childhood, 1-3 years): When children become aware of making decisions on their own and being in charge of their actions, they start to realize their ability for self-control.
3 Initiative vs. Guilt (Preschool, 3-6 years): Children realize power and control discreetly by planning the manipulations of their surroundings, achieving the set tasks, and overcoming hurdles simultaneously.
4 Industry vs. Inferiority (School Age, 6-12 years): With social interaction, their confidence increases due to continuous learning and success.
5 Identity vs. Role Confusion (Adolescence, 12-18 years): Teens must learn to have self and an inner sense of identity; this realization will continue to influence behavior and self-development into adulthood.
6 Intimacy vs. Isolation (Young Adulthood, 18-40 years): Adults in the age bracket of 18 to 30 years require romantic, loving relationships with their peers.
