A secondary source is when you read an original article and that articles cites another article. If you use the information from the original article regarding that other article without referring to the other articles original text then you must cite as a secondary source (Author, year as cited in Author year). 4. Direct Quotes: If you use 3 or more words, in a row, verbatim, from a source you must use quotation marks and cite as a direct quote. a. Direct Quotes should be limited as focus should be on paraphrasing the information and citing accordingly b. Quotes ARE NOT standalone sentences. Quotes should be integrated into an existing sentence or introduced. c. If a Direct Quote is longer than 4 lines of text, then it needs to be formatted and cited as a block quote. 5.
