Short Research Paper: Introduction to Development Psychology Student’s Name Institution Course # and Name Professor’s Name Submission Date Introduction The case of a feral child named Genie Wiley captured scientific and public attention in the early 1970s more than in previous cases because of the extreme abuse against her. She had stayed indoors, locked, and abused for more than a decade. She had an elder brother, John Wiley, who was five years older than her and was also subjected to child abuse by Carl Wiley, their father. Her mother, Irene Wiley, could not help her much because she was almost blind due to cataracts and lived in fear of her husband. At 13, her mother sneaked and informed a social worker about Genie’s situation. When the social workers visited the home, they found Genie in diapers, bound to a potty chair, imprisoned in a bedroom, and fully kept under control. The social workers took her to a Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, where professionals attended to her. She gained the affection of members of the public who wanted to follow up on her life and professionals, including psychologists and language experts, who found an opportunity to rehabilitate Genie. Developmental Analysis Cognitive Development Theory Human development from childhood to adulthood can be viewed as cognitive progress. Individuals actively develop an understanding of the world around them through continuous interactions with the environment. In Genie’s case, the cognitive development theory will focus on how she understood the world and the impact of external interactions. Genie was exposed to extreme deprivation by his father, and this affected her cognitive functioning and potential for remediation through intervention. Cognitive development theory has four stages: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage, and formal operational stage. Infants learn the world through their actions and senses in the sensorimotor stage (Sanghvi, 2020). Genie was exposed to prolonged isolation and lacked simulation, which disadvantaged her sensorimotor development. Being locked indoors for more than a decade limited her exploration of objects and people; hence, she struggled to develop basic cognitive skills. In the preoperational stage, children develop symbolic thinking and language skills. This is achieved through role-playing games and egocentric thinking typical for children between the ages of 2 to 5 years. In Genie’s case, she had little human interaction and was punished for making any sound (Top Documentary Films, 1997). She was not exposed to language learning opportunities, which affected her thinking capacity as she grew. The concrete operational stage allows children to develop the ability to think about concrete incidents and awareness of conservation principles logically. This was the focus of the scientists and healthcare practitioners because they wanted to correct her brutal past by treating her cognitive deficits. Scientists worked on her language acquisition and problem-solving abilities because she was far behind her agemates. Finally, the formal operation stage occurs during adolescence and beyond, allowing individuals to think abstractly and engage in hypothetical reasoning. Genie could not solve complex problems and consider multiple perspectives because she had no prior exposure to the world outside. Genie’s early childhood deprivation of cognitive development may have limited her ability to reach the formal operational stage (Sanghvi, 2020).
