Substance Use, its Types, Risks and Treatment Author’s Name The Institutional Affiliation Course Number and Name Instructor Name Assignment Due Date Introduction When individuals are addicted to a range of specific substances, they are in the complex condition of substance use disorder (SUD). The substances used by persons include Alcohol, Cocaine, Tobacco, Caffeine, and other similar forms. As a person uses one or more substances, they negatively impact their mental health, which leads to distress and eventually impacts their lives (Cleveland Clinic, 2024). Since this disorder can impact one’s health and quality of life, it’s central to approach the relevant clinician and get the required consultation to avoid risking life and ensure the removal of substance use disorders. This study sheds light on substance use, its types, and risk factors associated with this disorder, along with treatment methods to control or remove its existence. Types Alcohol Use Disorder In this disorder, a person is unable to stop using alcohol regardless of its grave consequences, such as losing a job, experiencing health issues, and impacting social life. Considering the health concern as one of the important factors of AUD, a study shows that an individual in the case of severe AUD condition may compromise their liver, experience heart attacks, and adverse psychological effects (Volkow & Blanco, 2023). Thus, AUD is a serious health concern that entails social, health, and financial costs if it’s not controlled. Opioid Use Disorder When an individual experiences a road accident, feels headache/backache, or goes through surgery due to falls/sports injury and other similar situations, doctors advise them to take Opioids, commonly called narcotics, such as pain relievers/heroin, for treating the pain. Opioids are known by a range of titles, including Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Morphine, and others. (American Society of Anesthesiologists, 2024). Evidence shows that musing Opioids is a serious health concern globally as it leads to different risk factors, such as slowed heart rate and loss of consciousness leading to death (Volkow et al., 2019). This order can be effectively controlled if the patient understands and abides by the doctor’s prescription in case of clinical problems. Stimulant Use Disorder A user experiences this order when they are used to stimulants. The most common but not limited to different forms of stimulants are cocaine and amphetamine, whereas doctors prescribe the medicines for treating this order; they include Ritalin and Adderall (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2022). If stimulants are used beyond the doctor’s prescription, they may cause severe health problems, including improved heartbeat, surprised chest pain, vomiting, and similar other symptoms leading to an individual’s life at stake. In the above case, the patient should contact their healthcare provider and take the prescribed medicine to reverse the impact. Cannabis Use Disorder A major impairment/distress happens when a person misuses Cannabis (a plant of the Cannabaceae family). Research shows that since it involves several biologically active compounds, Cannabis’ increased use results in different individual health problems, such as intoxication, biopsychosocial symptoms, and withdrawal (Patel & Marwaha, 2024). Since the risks of Cannabis Use Disorder are evident for patients, they need to understand the sensitivity of this disorder and take preventive actions to stay healthy. Hallucinogen Use Disorder Hallucinogen use disorder is mostly linked to an individual’s psychological well-being and abuse of drugs.
