Dr.Samantha Franklin Research and Events Paper on LGBTQ The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community is among the approved cultural groups whose needs are barely met because of the discrimination that they attract. LGBTQ consists of a group of individuals who showcase sexual orientation and gender identities that extend beyond the conventional binary categories of male and female or man and woman. The LGBTQ community has undergone a long process of transforming the perception that they attract in contemporary society. This two-part paper explores LGBTQ as an approved community within the confines of history and the present oppression that they undergo, and research on various treatment approaches in the first research portion. The events portion of the paper fosters the Pride Month events and an assessment of interest in LGBTQ through key events. A detailed exploration of LGBTQ through both research and events analysis lenses should steer a better understanding of this community in terms of their history, their current position, and what should be done to support their drive. The Research Portion Understanding LGBTQ must stem from an insightful exploration of some of the progress that the community has undergone historically before laying the perspective of their future. In this research portion, the analysis will foster four key areas that include the key historical events, patterns of immigration, attitudes and behaviors, and customs. The research portion will also explore the historical and current oppression of the cultural group as well as the treatment approaches that have been developed in research articles about the needs of the LGBTQ community. Key Historical Events Various key historical events define the experiences that individuals in the LGBTQ community. First among such events was the Stonewall Riots of 1969. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York. The intention of this raid was to arrest unlicensed alcohol retailers and customers who did not dress according to the conventional sexual/gender prescriptions. The arrests triggered an uproar that turned into riots eventually. The Stonewall Riot events led to the emergence of modern LGBTQ rights movements. The other significant event was the implementation of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy in 1993 under the Bill Clinton administration. The policy was a significant milestone for the community as it allowed gay individuals to offer their services to the military. However, the policy also prohibited people in service from engaging in homosexual behaviors. The individuals who were suspected of engaging in LGBTQ behaviors at the time were relieved from the service under the guidance of DADT policy. The two policies above changed the trajectory of the perceptions that people had of LGBTQ in the US. Patterns of Immigration The immigration policy has evolved considerably for the LGBTQ community in the US. In 1917, the US prohibited engagement in homosexual activities. At the time members of the LGBTQ community were medically labeled as “Constitutional Psychotic Inferiors”. The challenge continued until the end of the 1940s when members of the community were labeled as people with “abnormal sexual instincts” by the US Public Health Service. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan signed into law a policy aimed at prohibiting people who were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS from entering the US. Also, the Immigration Act of 1990 omitted homosexuality as a reason for prohibiting people from entering the US. The policies developed concerning LGBTQ in the 20th century were largely aimed at prohibiting participating in LGBTQ activities within the US. Attitudes and Behaviors Members of the LGBTQ community manifest diverse attitudes and behaviors toward religion and spirituality. Pew Research Center findings in 2013 found that members of the LGBTQ+ community were less likely to identify with any religion as opposed to the rest of the population. That is, 50% of LGBTQ members did not identify with any religion as opposed to only 20% of the general public that did not identify with any religion. In 2022, The Trevor Project found that members of the LGBTQ+ community struggle to link spirituality and religion with their behaviors. That is because most religions and spiritual configurations barely support their sexual identities.
