The "resource curse" is the paradox that states with more sloppy legislation and regulations controlling the extraction of natural resources tend to have less economic growth, less democracy, and worse development outcomes than countries with more controls (Angelini, 2023). Insightfully, the effects are most pronounced in Nigeria, where oil riches have fostered widespread challenges such as corruption, poverty, war, and environmental destruction. The reverse of this is Norway, a country that has avoided actually going down the Resource Curse by deciding not to let the money go into a few pockets (Angelini, 2023). Sovereign wealth funds, transparency, and environmental regulations have made it the actual model of how not to end up like the poster children for the Resource curse in the Media. Nigeria’s encounter with oil has been a troubled one. Nigeria ranks among the world's largest oil producers but has faced challenges due to years of corruption that have siphoned away much of the earnings that the country made from petroleum (Angelini, 2023). This has deepened poverty and inequality, and many Nigerians cannot reach basic services.
