They are such as editors of low-circulation abolitionist dailies and African American intellectuals who fought against slavery using science and rhetoric, but not armed struggle. This paper argues that the ideological leadership of the abolitionist movement extended beyond celebrated activists and major institutions, encompassing lesser-known figures whose rhetorical and intellectual contributions were equally vital. Female newspaper editors who wielded significant influence inserted fresh political rhetoric into the debate, while intellectuals like Benjamin Banneker discredited proslavery thinking based on scientific legitimacy. Both were instrumental to the movement's overall goals, offering alternative forms of leadership grounded in rhetorical strategy and intellectual force. Analyzing these other contributions further enriches the appreciation for abolitionism as a heterogeneous and complex movement. Language Change in Abolitionist Newspapers Abolitionist journals played significant roles in spreading antislavery ideas and shaping popular sentiment. As prominent journals like The Liberator obtained intense attention, minor journals also became involved in the discussion. Soni et al. (2021) developed a semantic influence model in which the extent to which newspapers borrowed words from one another over time was captured. The study determined which abolitionist newspapers were likely to create new language patterns and which were likely to be trailing behind. The most influential were women-edited papers like The Lily and The Provincial Freeman. From Table 2 of Soni et al. (2021), the abolitionist newspapers with high influence scores used what was adopted in the language, and other publications followed a similar pattern. Although lacking wide circulation, these newspapers influenced how key political concepts were framed and discussed. This result challenges assumptions that rhetorical leadership was confined to major publications. Smaller, less visible newspapers proved capable of leading the way in developing abolitionist language and shaping the broader narrative of the movement.
