Theoretical FrameworkSymptom Management Theory
In the article by Harvey, Lennen & Whitted (2018), the researchers used the symptom management theory to determine whether asthma assessment tools are useful to minimize distress associated with asthma symptoms in pediatric patients. This middle-range theory emphasizes symptom assessment management and treatment. The basic model addresses “symptom experience, components of symptom management strategies, and outcomes” (Harvey, Lennen & Whitted, 2018). Besides the symptom management theory, the article identifies an evidence-based practice change model to promote changes in nursing practice to promote asthma control and improve outcomes. Harvey, Lennen & Whitted (2018) also used the symptom management theory to assess asthma severity through the peak expiratory flow (PEF) and the asthma control test (ACT).
