Interprofessional Approach in Nursing Care
With the evolution of healthcare in the United States, interprofessional teams have now become an integral part of the system. Interprofessional collaboration plays a key role in preventing errors in medication, improving patients' experience, and delivering better care outcomes. These factors can significantly reduce healthcare costs, especially in my area of interest, which is palliative care. The team also plays a significant role in coordinating care and improving the education of their patients, thereby avoiding operational inefficiencies. The palliative care teams include social workers, physicians and surgeons, nurses, and pharmacists.
Interprofessional collaborations in palliative care concentrate on working with patients and their families along with the caregivers to deliver patient-centered care and individualized pain relief through the iCare components; compassion, advocacy, resilience, and evidence-based practice. Because the most frequently dealt cases are cardiovascular failures, traumas, and cancers, they require long-term guidance and management. The team must actively determine the care options, goals, and treatment plans for the patient, provide emotional support alongside physical care and coordinate their needs. Therefore, such an organization of diverse healthcare roles promotes specialized medical and nursing care for individuals presenting with such chronic conditions, ranging in severity.
Compassion
Compassion, by its virtue, is the ability to relate to another person's suffering and pain. It compels us to take action and help them and has become a necessary trait in nursing (Dalvandi et al., 2019). Compassion is a complicated and subjective matter, which contrasts among different care cultures (Blomberg et al., 2018). In palliative care, nurses are required to channel compassion by trying to build interpersonal relationships with their patients. Nurses try to know the patients and show interest in things they like. This inculcates relativity and promotes a trustworthy and safer care environment (Sinclair et al., 2017). It is also important to recognize patients' expectations and requirements, which induces a sense of satisfaction and helps people cope better with their chronic illnesses and modify their lifestyles and behavior accordingly.
Advocacy
Nurses are front-line health providers to thousands of people on a daily basis. This is why advocacy and political competence go hand in hand, as they can effectively use their platform to voice their patients' needs (Maaks, 2019). Not only this, but nurses can also enhance and define people's perceptions regarding palliative care and promote timely diagnosis of communicable and non-communicable diseases, treatment and even create awareness on the prevention of illnesses. Integration of advocacy in palliative care has been the torchbearer in constructing a humane healthcare system that does not discriminate. Nurse leaders' advocacy has lifted the stigma associated with non-communicable chronic illnesses and made functional plans to help in uplifting and motivating people towards a healthier lifestyle rather than battling alone.
