The essay topic for this research is the healthcare inequalities in the United States. Healthcare inequalities have increased in the united states over the past several decades. This is due to factors such as the ever-increasing income inequality. A study published in JAMA Network Open Friday sought to find out American’s self-reported health across all groups by asking questions such as how many healthy days an individual has in a month. The study used data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1993 to 2017. CITATION SUS19 \l 1033 (NEILSON, 2019) The findings concluded that self-reported health had decreased since 1993. Race, age, and income all had a role in predicting health outcomes. As such, white men with high-income brackets were among the healthiest group.
The state of focus for this research in Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta is the birthplace of one of the prominent civil rights leaders of his time, Martin Luther King Jr. Among the things that King advocated for is the call for justice and equality in healthcare. However, 50 years after his death, the community is still affected by substantial disparities in healthcare, despite Atlanta being home to world-class health care facilities. The community that is worst affected is black people.
The issue is problematic and saddening to see the wide gap in preventive care. Minority groups especially the African American community seem to get the short end of the stick which brings up the discussion of systemic racism in America.
