Hello:

As you prepare your final project, please note that this assignment is a continuation of work you did in Week 3 and Week 8. Use the feedback from the two assignment for this final project. Ideally, unless I recommended that you change your previous topic(s), you would use the topic you started with in Week 3. Week 3 and Week 8 work will be attached with the feedback so make sure you review it.

When you review the requirements for the project, you will notice that portions of the requirements are components of the Weeks 3 and 8 assignment. Therefore, as you work on the final submission, please review the two previous assignments plus the instructions for the project assignment. Also, the textbook and the Jacobsen (2012) slides together will provide you enough information for the methods section of the assignment.

Instructions of HSA4700 Project: Putting the Pieces Together

Fall 2020

The purpose of this assignment is to apply some of the Research Methods knowledge and concepts you have studied during the semester. Please pay attention to the Jacobsen (2012) power point slides I uploaded in the Week 10 and Weeks 11-13 modules.



The project has been designed so that you can share your experience during the process (rather than a straightforward research paper) and so that you can complete it quickly. For this assignment you will:

1. conduct a literature search.

2. create a mini literature review.

3. formulate a research problems statement and your research question.

4. discuss the methodology to answer the question.

5. design a draft of your data collecting instrument (survey, database selection, focus group, interview questions, and so on)

6. provide your thoughts on the process/experience.

7. include a list of references in APA Style (7th edition).





Assignment Components



1. Cover page: Include your name, course information, name of professor & date. Please do not use a template

2. Introduction: Provide a 1-2 paragraph opening. This should articulate the importance of your topic and should include at least one cited source.

3. Conduct a literature search: In 3-5 paragraphs or more, describe how you conducted your search.

a. Which database(s) did you use?

b. What were the search terms you used in the literature search? Please provide them in such a way that your search can be replicated. For example, there is a difference in the number of articles retrieved depending on how you enter the search terms: quality care v. “quality care” v. quality AND care v. quality OR care.

c. Did you have any search limiters?

d. How many articles did you use?

e. What was the number you used in your paper and how did you decide on your final selection?

4. Create a mini literature review (minimum 1 page)

a. With a minimum of five (5) sources (three (3) of them peer-reviewed study articles). Please create a literature review.

b. Cite all sources in APA 7th edition.

c. All sources should have corresponding references in the reference list.

5. Formulate the research statement and question.

The research question should be measurable.



6. Methods: In one or more pages, please describe how you would answer your research question. Cite the textbook (or other resources provided in the course). When citing your source(s), add the page number, paragraph number, or slide number. Remember to demonstrate how you would apply the components of the research method terminology in your paper. In short, it is not enough to use “jargon” without showing that you understand what it means and how it is relevant to your paper. Include the following elements:

a. Type of Study (primary, secondary, or tertiary)

b. Type of study design

c. Mention the variables of interest

(what you would have to measure). At minimum, include the dependent and independent variable.

d. Two or more limitations of your study and any other challenges

Introduction
COVID-19 posed a hazard to all the people worldwide. O’Byrne et al. (2020) state that the disease has affected millions of people, significantly the immunocompromised and those with comorbidities. The majority of them are the elderly. Many scholars from different disciplines, including the medical field, explained that the crisis created a dynamic shift in almost all aspects of everyone’s life.
Due to the infectious nature of COVID-19, volunteerism has become a popular event. The global distress led to the emerging rise of support volunteers in healthcare occurring already from China to England, and some of them are medical students, despite the grave challenges they face (Churchill, 2020; Miao et al., 2020). This paper focuses on the specific challenges faced by medical students who volunteered to assist in the fight against COVID-19 and the repercussions of their actions. It is essential to evaluate the coping behavior or mechanism of the volunteers, specifically the medical students, to prevent global exhaustion and the loss of medical professionals in the future because the medical students will become the future of healthcare.

As seen in the table, there is a difference in the number of yields when limiters are used compared when searching freely. Additionally, there is also a difference in the number of yields when the word “AND” is used, and when the words or phrases are only separated by a comma (“,”).
Google scholar has no option to limit the results to full papers. Hence, the researcher selected the full articles, based on importance, manually. The final selection of the articles was based on the following: First, in order of relevance to the topic; Second, the reliability of the original or primary database (i.e., PubMed, EBSCO, Proquest, Elsevier); third, the study design (i.e., randomized controlled trials, cohort, case studies); and fourth, the study must be a full article. From these criteria, a total of five (5) articles were selected. These articles are from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, the National Academy of Medicine, the BMJ, and the Jama Network.
Literature Review
Traditionally, medical students' primary goal, especially those close to graduating in medicine, is to learn and work as a clinician-in-training guided by licensed physicians, which is only a secondary objective. Medical students are unlicensed. However, the secondary goal is also as important as the primary for medical students have to understand and perform proper patient care through a thorough assessment from interviewing patients, calling consults, patient and family communication, responding to patients, writing the subjective, objective assessment, plan (SOAP) notes, and assisting with procedures (Miller et al., 2020).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, various institutions prohibited medical students to immerse themselves in clinical settings for the hospital may pose an occupational hazard. However, in some instances, they allowed volunteers to assist in routine outpatient care, fetching laboratory results, and in-patient services to non-COVID patients (Miller et al., 2020; Bauchner & Sharfstein, 2020).
Engelson et al. (2020) suggest that volunteer medical students must undergo evaluation and inclusion criteria to prevent further harm to the vulnerable, such as the children, the elderly, the immunocompromised, and those in palliative care. With this, the “CovidSitters” are required to get an up-to-date immunization, valid medical student identification card, and a meticulous lifestyle check to prevent harming oneself. An example group is the COVID-19 Medical Student Response Team, whose primary purpose is to create a systematic student-led organization that would help medical students mobilize their interested colleagues in joining the fight against the pandemic clinically or in the community (Soled et al., 2020).
However, there are other ways to volunteer, aside from the mainstream clinical setting. Other medical students volunteered in advocacy groups that provided peer support to those who indirectly fought the disease while others engaged in social media advocacy. An example of this is the Health Students Helping in Pandemics Platform (HealthSHIP), an organization directed at offering childcare services to parents who work in the clinics to minimize the possible transmission of infection to their children (Kinder & Harvey, 2020).
Research Questions
The current gap in the literature is the lack of information on the physical, mental, and emotional consequences of volunteering during the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic among the medical student volunteers. In line with this, the specific research questions are:
1 To determine the negative impact of volunteering in the clinical setting during the COVID-19 pandemic in medical students using a survey questionnaire.
2 To analyze the negative impact of volunteering in the clinical setting during the COVID-19 pandemic based on gender differences using a survey questionnaire.
