The purpose of this essay is to review and critique the article “In Search of the Truth: Uncovering Nursing’s Involvement in Colonial Harms and Assimilative Policies Five Years Post Truth and Reconciliation Commission.” The article was written by Symenuk et al. (2020). The study's findings will be analyzed and critiqued based on research methodology, source of bias, and its effect on nursing practice. The exercise aims to demonstrate the ability to critically review a research study and analyze its implications for nursing practice. Purpose of Study The primary research question posed by Symenuk et al. (2020) in their study is designed to discover how nursing has complied with the TRC of Canada’s call to give the truth and, in particular, expose the nursing profession’s function as five colonial harms that continue to harm Indigenous people today, in five colonial vices: Indian Hospitals, Indian Residential Schools, child apprehension, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), and forced sterility. Research Approach and Methods The research method used in this study is a qualitative study. A qualitative study will seek to capture the issue under discussion in more detail. The approaches include interviews, observations, and literature studies (Kraus et al., 2022). Regarding Symenuk et al. ’s study, the method approach allowed the authors to explore the problem, identifying the presence of a great deal of diverse information, which can hardly be discovered when using quantitative research. The method provides various analyses and developments and assists in recognizing areas that need further research (Booth et al., 2021). This is useful to this study because it has provided some understanding of the potential role of nursing in colonial harm.
