Abstract
This paper discusses the requirements and details of the State of New Jersey, United States of America, concerning the advanced practice nurses. The requirements include educational, prescription authority, and patient safety. Moreover, this paper also discusses the role of the regulatory organizations responsible for controlling the practice of APNs.
The basic and continuing education including other requirements such as collaboration and scope of work for an APN prescribing authority and further examinations are identified. With the given authority to APNs to prescribe medications, they are given a broader scope of practice. However, regulatory bodies are necessary to produce guidelines that will ensure maximal patient safety.
Prescription requirements also vary such as in prescribing non-cancer pain medications. Since these medications have extreme adverse effects that may affect the quality of life, a stricter set of guidelines has been created by the responsible regulatory boards.
This paper also specifies the protocols for controlled dangerous substances (CDS) including, but not limited to, the following: patient education, pain medication refills, and contracts. Moreover, this paper elaborates on the schedules of the CDS.
