Research has proved that hand washing can help prevent more than half of the ailments that befall the human species. In the healthcare sector there has been enough evidence that; hand washing by the health care workers can go a long way in preventing healthcare associated infections. The question that begs for answer is whether the health care workers comply with the hand washing routine so as to ensure reduction of the healthcare associated infections.
Compliance predictors
There are myriad factors which can be said to the predictors of compliance of hand washing by health care professionals. Among those predictors are beliefs about outcome and attitude. The beliefs about outcome come in as a predictor of hand washing compliance in the sense that, what the health care provider beliefs to have great impact will propel them to do it more and in precise manner.
When the healthcare providers understand the impact of hand washing, they do it more and with willingness. Those that do not belief in the positive impact of hand washing will not care much about it and will therefore not comply with it.
The attitude of the health care providers is also a predictor of the compliance of hand washing by the health care providers. When health care providers have positive attitude towards the patients, they will tend to do anything to prevent deterioration of their conditions and to improve their situation. This will therefore make them compliant to hand washing in a bid to prevent the healthcare associated infections.
Compliance of handwashing
Healthcare workers are expected to be on the frontline in complying with the hand washing routine by the virtue of the nature of their profession. However, thorough investigation has proved that most of healthcare workers to dot comply with hand washing. The investigations into the compliance of hand washing by the health care workers is important because, it can be used to sensitize them to become more compliant and hence, help to prevent the healthcare associated infections. This paper analyses the findings of investigations on the compliance of health care workers to hand washing as a way of decreasing healthcare associated infection. The general observation is that there is no strong compliance to this noble act which can greatly reduce healthcare associated infections.
