Now more than ever before, nurses are faced with complex moral choices in the face of diverse patient needs while they need to adhere to the professional code of ethics (Epstein, & Delgado, 2010). The incoming RN needs teds to talk to the outgoing RN and urge her to show love and compassion rather than pass judgment about the patient’s lifestyle choices. This is consistent with the ethical principle of respecting patients and their worth regardless of their health problems. The issue of alcoholism has affected the outgoing patient’s decision making and attitude, and the incoming also has to identify the most appropriate course of action. Emotional interference with care complicates the case, but the incoming RN will consider further actions when and if the outgoing nurse does no reconsider his/ her decisions. This includes lodging a complaint with the hospital administration that the outgoing is purposely not protecting the patient.
The situation requires personal reflection and the incoming RN should also voice his/ her concerns to the outgoing RN about patient treatment. Since the nurses’ primary responsibility is to the patients, the incoming RN will also point out this to the outgoing RN, since failure to do this has legal ramifications. Commitment to the patients then signify that where possible the incoming RN is to include other medical practitioners in undertaking interventions to improve patient care (Kjervik & Brous, 2010). As a patient advocate the RN must not let the patient circumstances influence their decision when caring for the patient with liver cirrhosis. The RN will also rely on the regulatory framework, as it supports the nurses’ responsibility to improve care without causing harm to patients.
