Introduction
Many experts alleged that myths and misunderstandings about child development can often get in the way of student learning (Mercer, 2009). They even believed that these misconceptions can create negative implications on child development more particularly on their intellectual growth and maturity. One of the myths that some parents consider is that the more sophisticated toys more likely give brain stimulation. It is considered as a myth that the more sophisticated toys given to baby give maximum brain stimulation. As a matter of fact, no evidence shows that a particular toy will develop a child into a more nurtured and smarter toddler. Experts like Dr. Adesman explicated the moment the baby is given the opportunity to discover his or her environment, a more stimulating environment will eventually lead to better brain stimulation. In this regard, sophisticated toys or expensive toys are not the only key factors to ensure brain development of the child. Although, it is undeniable that babies have visual preference, they prefer more colorful things than monochromatic colors like black and white. However, said fact must not lead the parents to craft misconceptions that surrounding a baby with these colorful images or toys will in due course aid in the boosting of their baby’s intelligence or brain development (Bielecki, 2009).
This is only one of the myths, but in this paper, the author prefers to look into the myths and common misunderstandings concerning speech delays.
Speech Delays
One of the most common misconceptions about child development is concerning their language. Common of which is the so-called monolingual brain. Do children have a difficulty in learning more than one language at one time? Parents and older generation typically believed that children with language learning difficulties more often than not his or her 2nd language acquisition creates a burden and jeopardizes the 1st language learning and development (Genesee, 2015). Another which is typical to baby is about a child’s speech delay.
It is a common myth that the child’s speech or language delay is nothing to be concerned about since for them a child will sooner or later overcome these tribulations with age. But the same does not hold water at all. But the reality and common experience dictate that the signs of speech and/or language delays must be given full at comprehensive attention. Experts like Dr. Adesman expounded that parents and the older generation must be familiar with the intricacies and differences of speech which is typically associated with the quality of one’s sound and language which pertains to the content of communication. Its Implications
Experts considered that the speech development of a child takes time, but it must be noted that even Einstein, who had speech problems, became our generation’s known science genius. Incidentally, experts give a constraint to the laid back thinking of many concerning speech or language delay. They pointed out that if at the age of four (4), a child’s speech is still difficult to understand for other people then the problem exist. Nevertheless, they advised parents not to implement nor consider the wait-and-see approach. Early intervention is still important when dealing with child development. If they will not act, a more prevalent at persisting speech difficulties will most probably occur even during the school years of the child. Worse scenario, it can become an early stage of autism. It can even direct to slower progression with a child’s reading comprehension and overall school achievement. There are even cases that speech or language delay resulted in poor peer relationship, bullying, and less productive and enjoyment of school. Speech delay is the root of other myths and misunderstandings of child development, listed below are some of the associated misconceptions on speech delays:
* Accordingly, speech problems are known to be caused by tongue-tie or also known as ankyloglossia. This exists when a stern tongue-tie lessens the mobility of one’s tongue. Recent studies do not suggest that having a tongue-tie is associated with speech problems. It may create a minimal problem with child’s speech sounds concerning “l” and “th” but the same is not the focal basis of speech problem.
* Another myth is the notion that children who don’t speak are deemed as lazy individuals. One who divulges this is a clear embodiment of someone who has no knowledge on speech and/or language delay. People may also consider the association of phonological disorder. So, it is not about the child’s laziness, it can even be linked to the child’s difficulty in learning the grammar rules’ intricacies and complications. Therefore, it is a glaring misconception that people will even associate a child’s speech and/or language delay to laziness. They must consider also the clear reality that this problem brings difficulty to the child and his or her parents.
* Therapy does not work with speech problems does not hold water. The truth is, with the right intervention at the right age (between three to four years old) and comprehensive quantity of time a child will be able to conquer his or her speech problems (Common myths about speech problems in children, 2015).
