1 Abstract
Single mothers play the role of both parents. Latino single mothers struggle to fit in the foreign country and give their children financial and emotional security. In trying to earn a living in a foreign country, they come across different challenges. The study will analyze the challenges that single Latino immigrant mothers face in their everyday life. Also, it will describe the best solution to the problem. The paper is divided into several sections. First, it will have a brief introduction that will explain the livelihood of single mothers. Also, it will have a literature review that analyzes other researches on the topic. The following section is the study-based answer that will help explain the situation length, and a solution is recommended. Finally, it will have a conclusion that summarizes the whole paper.
2. Introduction
Migration is the international movement to a foreign country aiming to settle permanently and become citizens. The migration of Mexicans to the United States of America is the world's most significant international movement. According to Oliveira (2017), people migrate with the hope of having a better life in the new country. For many years, men have dominated among the Mexican immigrants to the US, making researchers concentrate on topics that address their issues, forgetting women, the most affected group. Though women are the ones that carry the family effect of immigration, whether they are left behind or they move, they still end up unnoticed (Alacevich & Nicodemo, 2019). The drastic increase of Latino women to the United States in the last few decades invites the researchers to address the challenges such women face. Most of them have to deal with both their issues and problems that affect their children.
Women have the sixth sense that makes them more caring of people around them than any other group. Unlike men, women cannot quickly abandon their children and start a new life in the new country. Therefore, women have to choose between staying behind with their children or migrating with them. They lack the option of leaving the family behind, a decision that men quickly take. Women have to think of the family households, possible stressors, children adjustment or traumatic incidence, and many other problems. The burdens on the female migrants need to be tacked to enable the women to feel appreciated for the effort they make regarding the future of their families. The paper will address the different challenges that female Latino immigrants face and recommend the best solution to the problem.
2 Literature Review
According to Alacevich and Nicodemo (2019), women are the most vulnerable group among immigrants. Because of the sixth sense, they have to carry the family responsibility after the fathers leave. In the process of looking for greener pastures, Latino single mothers opt to migrate to America (Kielsgaard et al., 2018). The decision seems exciting, but reality sets in when they get to the foreign country. Surviving in the new country becomes difficult than they had expected. The study by Carywright and Chacon (2021) says that they have to navigate through fighting to find their family's daily meal and hide from being deported. The mothers have to compete with men in the field that are more advantageous than them giving the employers the reason to exploit them (Olcon & Gulbas, 2018). Out of desperation, some single mothers choose to join criminals and start drug trafficking, which might cost them their life.
Griffin (2018) asserts that the children also suffer from the lack of father figures. Most of them struggle with identity crises. The lack of fathers creates a significant gap in their life that can lead them to depression if not addressed. Three main strategies can solve the problem—first, the creation of empowerment programs for single mothers. Smith (2017) confirms that the program will equip them with skills, including English speaking, that will enable them to compete with others when searching for jobs. Also, the United States government can ease the temporary permit registration process. The documents will allow them to enjoy the public resources and social services (Oliveira, 2017). Finally, introducing a Latino culture unit in the American curriculum will increase tolerance; hence harassment and bullying of single mothers will reduce (Landale et al., 2019).
3 Research-Based Answers
Latino women migrants have been facing a lot of challenges in their moving process. Most of them have the task of moving with children; hence, they have a double problem compared to men who walk migrate alone. Recently, the number of women moving into America from Mexico has increased significantly. Instead of staying and waiting for the men to come back a rescue them, women choose to move in search of a better life in foreign countries. Such women end up having a stricter life in comparison to men. Women experience various problems due to immigration. The single women that remain in Mexico experience different problems from those that decide o migrate to a foreign country.
The belief that America is a better place than Mexico has pushed many Latinos men to migrate to earn a living for the family. Once the men get to the new country and find the reality to be different, they forget about their families and move on. Because of this, the number of single women in Mexico has increased drastically. These women end up facing many challenges when raising their children. Some of these women decide to remain and find ways of surviving in their homeland, while others migrate with their children and try to get a better life in a foreign land. The two groups of single mothers face various problems in their everyday life.
* Effect to the households
Migration disrupts the relationship between households. During the international movement, family members end up separating from each other. In most cases, men move and leave their homes, leaving the women to care for their children. The situation forces most children to grow without their father or any other father figure. Such children lack a stable foundation hence destroying their future. The mothers that remain behind have to play the role of providing and nurturing the kids. The single mothers’ divided attention affects the impact they have on the children. According to Landale et al. (2019), children raised with single mothers struggle with identity and suffer from low self-esteem. Young children seem to compare themselves with other children of their age. Once they realize that other children have fathers and do not have, the kids feel like they lack value. If the problem is not addressed, they end up becoming depressed and even suicidal. The death of such children affects the mothers directly.
Additionally, children without fathers have higher chances of crime involvement. Cartwright & Chacon, 2021 says that over half of children raised with single mothers have questionable characters. Most of them, especially the boys, become rebellious at teenagehood because of the psychological and emotional instability. If the problem is not solved early, it progresses beyond rebelling against their parents and the government.
