Fire protection is vital to safety assurance in an industrial facility or a residential building. The modern facility requires stringent and efficient fire protection systems and solutions as infrastructure develops and grows. Fires are among the most disastrous events that organizations and individuals face, as loss of life, severe injuries, and immense destruction of property and assets characterize them. On this critical background, there is every need to be aware of some of the forms of fire protection systems currently available with the technological advancements considered in increasing efficiency. The focus of this paper is to discuss some fire protection systems currently used, their applications, and relevant technologies of the past years to illustrate how far the application of fire safety has been in dealing with fire hazards.
Protection Systems
Different Types
By category, fire protection systems can include protection against fire suppression and storing or removing water to fight fire. The most common fire protection systems are active and passive systems.
Active Fire Protection Systems consist of mechanisms that directly take action and suppress or control a fire. Examples include fire alarms, sprinklers, and fire extinguishers. In addressing a fire, these are meant to automatically or manually respond to detect fire to quickly extinguish or contain flames (Kodur et al., 2020).
Passive Fire Protection Systems: These systems do not require activation to restrict the spread of fire and smoke. Kodur et al. (2020) mention fire-resistant construction materials, including firewalls, fire doors, and smoke barriers, that are included as they are. These building design elements incorporate these materials and structures and create safety by maintaining structural integrity during an incident and providing safe egress routes.
Each type of system must be used for the fire safety management strategy. Active systems such as sprinklers and fire alarms, for example, not only detect fires but can suppress flames, lowering damage. In contrast, passive systems promote a fire's containment and protect from damage to keep people safe while evacuating (Kempna et al., 2018).
How and Why the Protection Systems Are Used
Implementing fire protection systems is guided by various factors, including local safety regulations, the building's environment, and associated risks. The legal standards for designing and implementing fire safety are laid down in local laws. Active (smoke detectors, automatic sprinkler systems) and passive systems (fire-resistive walls) are essential together in high-rise buildings; active systems act immediately on fires, while passive walls can limit and contain the spread of the fire. As Dabous et al. (2024) discussed, this integrated approach develops a comprehensive fire safety strategy for dealing with unique high-rise structure challenges.
The type of occupancy and the specific activities carried out in a building predominantly influence the selection and design of fire protection systems and identify the possible fire hazards related to those specific activities. Different fire risks exist for different types of occupancies, that is, residential, commercial, or industrial, and different types of fire safety are required (Lee et al., 2020). Usually, regulations require installing some systems to verify compliance with fixed safety standards. An example of this is in industrial environments where a fire alarm system may be linked to automated devices, which, when triggered, activate sprinklers within the system.
