Reflective Log of Chapter
Research Paper Instructions:
Read any of the chapters, relate the new concepts you learn from these chapters to real-world events you have experienced/seen, and use the new concepts you learned to see the real-world events you have experienced in a new light. Therefore, consider this log deliverable as your opportunity to further explore and then expand upon those reflections in a ‘reflective journal’.
Here are some ground rules for submission of this individual assignment:
1. You will need to submit ONE reflective log/journal.
2. You must choose one or more lectures and write a reflection for any week with lectures and assigned readings.
3. You must give one or more examples that relate the new concept to real-world events you have experienced/seen and derive new perspectives and ideas.
4. Your journal entry will be evaluated for its ability to:
(1) demonstrate a deep understanding of the issue
(2) make appropriate real-world connections to the topic, and
(3) creatively (but professionally) integrate all of the above criteria in a convincing way that both demonstrates critical thinking and expresses your unique perspective
The following is the Rubric, you must complete the following four points in your writing:
1, Describe a compelling real-world situation, such as a cross-cultural encounter/situation. You may have observed in the news or among people you know, or personally experienced (e.g., Perhaps when working with others at university or on the job, when interacting with
service providers, or perhaps on your travels)
2. Apply pertinent course material to it demonstrate an accurate and in-depth understanding of how it helps to explain AND inform future such situations. Marks lost if you offer some good reflections on the course material but with some degree of inaccurate or incorrect understanding of course material.
3. Apply an external source:
Reflect on what it implies for your described situation (or similar ones in the future). In what ways does this source reinforce/contradict your selected course material?
When writing, pause for a moment to critically reflect/comment on whether you have considered that particular media source’s potential political bias, and how it might have influenced your insights/perspectives. You can use the websites mentioned in this article to help you discern this: https://www(dot)poynter(dot)org/factchecking/media-literacy/2020/should-you-trust-media-bias-charts/ (last accessed Dec 21, 2020).
4. Selection of an appropriate external source:
Marks lost if you select an external source that is a poor, rather than irrelevant to the situation you presented under (b). A good source for this deliverable has the following qualities:
- The source is not more than 2 years old. (It is mandatory to provide the link to your source with each submission; if not possible, then scan the item, ensuring that the date of publication shows.)
- It may be a peer reviewed research article or a pertinent current news article, NOT Wikipedia.
- It is not already included in your assigned readings for this course

For this reflection journal, I will interpret the concepts learned from 3319-Week05 Lecture2-C7, motivation and leadership, using a real-life situation that happened in the news recently. More specifically, I will look at the ongoing global debate about remote work policies for multinational companies and their leadership issues, especially within tech giants such as Google and Apple, which have squarely fallen with the challenge of balancing diverse cultural expectations around motivation and leadership. I will apply insights from other course materials to this assignment and substantiate it with arguments, including perspectives from external sources.
Compelling Real-World Situation: Remote Work and Leadership Challenges at Multinational Companies
The remote work policy has recently become a highly debated issue at multinational companies such as Google, Apple, and Amazon. As the COVID-19 pandemic shifted workplace norms, many employees became accustomed to a new paradigm of working remotely and demanded to continue working like that ad infinitum. However, corporate leadership at these companies has pushed for a return to office-based work based on collaboration, creativity, and team cohesion. This friction reveals a divergence between management's preference and the evolving employee expectations, which are highly variable across cultures and regions.
Take Google leadership, for instance, which has been finding it hard to devise a single, effective policy that pleases its employees across the globe. Conscious of this, in most countries, the call back into the office is quickly complied with, while in other populous countries, like the United States, there is noticeable resistance; some foresee and would appreciate the flexibility and balance that comes with working from home. Matters are further compounded by the diverse cultural settings in which the company operates, influencing how leadership and motivational strategies are viewed and implemented. This presents a perfect opportunity to apply concepts of motivation and leadership from 3319-Week05-Lecture2-C7.
Cross-Cultural Leadership Dynamics
One of the most discussed concepts in 3319-Week05-Lecture2-C7 is that leadership is perceived differently across cultures. The GLOBE study mentioned in the lecture provides insights into the cultural dimensions relevant to determining leadership and its effectiveness. For example, in countries that have a low power distance, such as the United States and people from Western European countries, leaders are expected to be participative, listen to their employees' voices, and consider their opinions when making decisions. That may explain why employees in those regions have also pushed back on the...
