Abstract.
Graphic design is a type of design that incorporates visual compositions to communicate ideas and solve challenges through color, form, typography, and imagery in different ways. Art Deco is a style in graphic, and art strategy is a movement that began in the early twentieth century. The movement served as an essential channel that worked well for the traditional and modern design response to challenges that occurred in the century. Art Deco came by in the years between the world wars. It emerged and was used to express everyday life on different surfaces like buildings, among others. This paper sets out to describe the history, features, and the impact of the movement in the twentieth century geographically and socially in graphic design. Art Deco designers of the twentieth century like Tamara de Lempicka, created compositions of original work of art that were used to pass a message to the people or help in solving problems. Art illustrations like graphic patterns for buildings, textiles, album arts, and concept art have been used for graphic design. With the movement emerging in between the world wars, art Deco impacted on the development of the graphic design that was used to express the fears and hopes during the war.

Graphic design is best known as the process of communicating and solving challenges through the use of imagery, text, and a combination of symbols. The designers bring together the various elements to construct an attractive visual representation of ideas and messages. Art Deco is a movement in arts, mostly popular in the early twentieth century as a drawing style that relies on patterns, clear lines, and bold designs. Art Deco embraced both craft and fine arts in its execution, with its application being decorative art like furniture, fashion, graphic, and the visual arts of painting. The movement characterized by restructured arrangements, geometric shapes, cubism as well as concentrated color patterns was derived from a broad spectrum of sources. The movement and period were formed as a visual art and literature celebration of the work of several artists. The movement extensively impacted on graphic design through architectural layout, writing font, car designs as well as fashion in the 1930s. The decorations used during the Art Deco period in the early twentieth century were used to pass messages before and during the world wars. Different artistes engaged in the art through posters, furnishings, textile, furniture, and fashion designs, which were all streamlined forms rather than in painting or sculptures. The decoration was related to luxury and modernism, which had to do with the materials and craftsmanship put into form in architecture, furniture, and fashion. Art Deco was considered a sophisticated style for the upper class that loved fashion and covered every sphere of the decorative arts from ceramics, glass, jewelry, metalware, and a bit of sculpture.
 The emergence of the new impulse art decoration was as a result of accepting the technological advancement in machines and graphic designs as well as having nature as an inspiration for the design. The movement was also established to fill the growing need for nurturing new markets while cutting across all the social levels. Decorative art made the machines a tool as well as inspiration for the designer’s work.
The aim of this research is to gather and discuss the different impacts of decorative art influence on visual communications and problem-solving in the twentieth century. The study is through the comparison and study of the use and effects of Art Deco in fashion, architecture, interior design, furniture, and art illustration.
History of art Deco
The study of the decorative art movement would be incomplete if the historical context of the period is not reviewed in the political and economic aspects. Art Deco is a style of architecture, visual arts, and design first realized in France right before the emergence of the First World War. The movement took place between the two world wars when the world was dominated by a desire for speed, opulence, and luxury. The decorative art came about as an influence from several major artistic styles. The influences that formed Art Deco included geometric cubism form, futurism and constructivism machine-style, and Art Nouveau’s amalgamation methodology. Although it came about from several sources, the period did not base its foundation on the influence, the movement was established on a purely decorative basis. The movement’s description of style succumbs to an appreciation of the instability that was the early twentieth-century design. Art Deco emerged as a bridge between the end of the 19th century and the arrival and modernity of a new century. Richard Striner considered the movement the central array between the customary and revolutionary reactions to the early twentieth-century encounters. The period of the decorative art was artistic, but momentary due to the instability brought about by the war. The style got its name from an event showcasing decorative arts in Paris in 1925 known as Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs. The workshop was held to give a platform for designers and artists to showcase new inspiration in applied decoration.
