The concept I found most interesting this week is total institutions. I found this concept interesting because while I am aware of the existence of institutions such as prisons, monasteries, and the army, I had never before thought about how individuals within them are socialized. I am wondering how such socialization impacts the lives of the inmates or army personnel. When army members go back home after years with the force, do they portray significantly different behaviors from those they had when they joined? If I joined the army today and spent years away from home, would I come back a totally different person due to the nature of the institution?
