Tax to reduce livestock emissions of methane and nitrous oxide is ineffective as the cost of production will increase and be pushed to the consumers and only targets farmers and ignores other sectors of the economy. Farmers now invest heavily in good quality forage for livestock, and increasingly focus on the improvement of environmental quality. So the $300 pay would make the industry less competitive and the country may even increase imports of livestock products.
