At the beginning of the story, attention is drawn to the main character, Miss Emily. As a result of her death, a lot of issues can be reviewed. The writer begins the story with death as the main theme. He describes how people behave in the event of certain changes in a society; in this case, it was the southern people. The death of Miss Emily helps us learn how she had refused to accept the death of her father looking back at how she reacted (Getty 1). Many people expected her to be in grief, but she acted differently and lived in denial for a while. Later she accepted this situation. In the story, Miss Emily is portrayed to have feared change. She prevented all sorts of changes by using death.
In a different aspect, the story can be used to examine the issue of race. By the time William Faulkner wrote the story, the southern part of his town was famous for racism. The author conveys racism by using terms like “negro” (Zijiao, 2291), illustrating how ...
