The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Concisely, Robert Stevenson published the novel in "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1886. The mystery thriller novel is about a certain respectable man who in his laboratory takes occasionally takes a potion to become a dark and evil individual. The novel begins with the lawyer (Mr. Utterson) who with his relative Mr. Enfield are on a walk. After walking past a door, Mr. Enfield remembers ascertain sad story that he tells his relative Mr. Utterson. The story is about a brutal man who knocks down a young girl, after a aloud yelled from onlookers, the man disappears into a door and after a short while he comes back with a cheque signed by one prominent man. The cheque signer is disclosed as Dr. Jekyll and the man who knocked down the young woman is no other than Mr. Hyde.
It turns out that Mr. Utterson is Dr. Jekyll’s lawyer since Dr. Jekyll instructed Mr. Utterson that in case of an event of his death or disappearance, his state should be handed down to Mr. Hyde. The suspicious Lawyer about his client’s activities with Mr. Hyde prompts Him to follow the whole mystery. He hunts Mr. Hyde down to a certain house that is adjacent to Dr. Jekyll is and finds Mr. Hyde. He notes that Mr. Hyde is undefinably ugly and deformed man but despite his surprise, Mr. Hyde offers Mr. Utterson his address to visit someday. Dr. Jekyll remains in privacy and refuses to comment on the matter about Mr. Hyde.
After sometime, according to the narrator, a house cleaner witnesses Mr. Hyde commit another crime by brutally beat an old man to death. The old man later turns out to be a prominent politician. The police contact Lawyer Mr. Utterson after the murder of Sir Danvers Carew, the prominent politician. He offers to lead the police to Mr. Hyde his home since he had the addressed for his home. On arrival, they discovered Mr. Hyde had fled away. After the police, Mr. Utterson visits Dr. Jekyll in the intention to question him about the whereabouts of his successor on his wealth but he his surprised to learn from the Doctor that they no longer have a connection with Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll shows Mr. Utterson a letter written by Mr. Hyde apologizing about all the pain and agony he had caused and bid him bye.
Sometime after the disappearance, Jekyll changes and starts acting friendly and sociable. However this was not long lived, Jekyll started refusing visitors and his friend, Lanyon suddenly dies some days after visiting him due to a shock in connection with Jekyll. He leaves behind a letter before he dies that should be opened on Jekyll’s death.
Meanwhile the narrator goes on walking with his relative Enfield and they see Dr. Jekyll at his laboratory. They meet him and try to talk him but he shows no interest and leaves saddened. Later, Mr. Poole visits Jekyll who now is in hiding in his laboratory in a state of depression. For several weeks, he has isolated himself in the laboratory and then servants are in fear that something might is wrong. After breaking the door, they confirm the worst. They find the body of Hyde dressed in Jekyll’s clothes and actually dead by suicide with a letter from Jekyll to Utterson promising to explain.
In summary, the novel uses different styles in literature for passing in formation from one person to another. The use of the letters before individuals die with promises from the decease not to open until certain occurrence has happened leaves one in suspension. The suspension creates the story interesting as the reader keeps reading hoping the letter will be read somewhere and the message revealed. From the plot and structure of the novel, Lawyer Utterson is good-natured and likable despite his unsmiling and dreary behaviors. His one individual who loves exercising by walking alone or with someone just to pass a conversation.
Enfield describes Hyde exclusively to Mr. Utterson; his description creates an image of someone no normal man could ever want to meet in his entire life. He mentions that he disliked the man the moment he saw him. He looked ugly, displeasing, deformed and gave a strong sensation of deformity. From the letters left behind by the characters, Lanyon’s explained what happened before he died. Jekyll used chemical to transform himself to Hyde, he was shocked and knew he was not going tom survive thus writing the letter.
In Jekyll letter, he wrote how he had scientifically found a way of transforming someone from good and bad. By using, he has an experimental sample, he was able to transform to Hyde, the bad person and at the same time remain Jekyll, the good person. Jekyll enjoyed his discovery by transforming to Hyde and back to Jekyll whenever he felt like. However, one night something went wrong and Hyde ended up killing Sir Danvers Carew. After he transformed to Jekyll and realized what Hyde was capable, he resorted to committing suicide.
Jekyll’s intentions were to create two persons in one body, Jekyll created Hyde through science and in the laboratory without any extra body. He formed chemical concoctions that he took to transform to the evil person he desired to be. His motivation was that an individual who is normally a mixture of good and evil could be separable and transform to good or evil when he wished to. From understanding, Jekyll suffered from multiple personality disorder. An individual suffers from one personality or identity in this mental disorder. One personality takes control of the mind while the other is docile and the docile one takes over when the other has become docile. The personalities cannot operate both at once.
