Sensation and Perception Essential Questions: • How do humans perceive the world to make judgments? • What differences of perceptions exist throughout the population and what does that tell us about our perceptions? • What are the limits of perception and how does perception fail? • What is self-perception? Essay Prompt: In this unit, we have investigated some of the links between sensation and perception. We also have begun an investigation of the role sensation and perception have in creating our self image. We have explored the biology of sensation to see how, for example, light waves turn into neural impulses. We have seen how the brain takes those neural impulses and turns them into perceptions. We have even explored how misperception can occur, and why it occurs so commonly. Finally, we explored some of the ways that that sensation and perception influence the way we perceive ourselves. For example, some students may be more accurate in judging their result on a linear algebra exam, but horrible at judging how their performance of WAP will affect the judges of CCBC’s Got Talent. For this writing assignment, you will create one of three possible documents. Choose one of the essay prompts below: 1) Public Education: Design a course lesson plan for elementary [Health Education] or secondary [Health Education, Science, American Government] a) Design a course lesson plan for a particular audience. That audience may be: i) an elementary school Health Education course ii) a secondary school (high school) Health Education course iii) a secondary school Science course iv) a secondary school American Government course discussing civil rights and the American with Disability Acts b) Know your audience. Don’t use vocabulary or ideas that your audience can’t understand. c) Download the Lesson Plan Template and edit it to create your lesson plan. Don’t forget that the audience for the lesson plan is teachers, but the audience for the lesson is students. Instructions: This writing assignment needs to be 700-800 words. You will need to integrate at least three sources to support your ideas. You may use direct quotes or paraphrase but you must properly cite you sources using MLA. These sources could be three course materials from ENGL 101 or other sources you find on your own. You may find additional (more than three) resources (newspaper, magazine, book, journal) that strengthen your writing, but it is not required. If you do this, remember you still need to properly cite these extra sources both in-text and on the references page. You should try to follow the template for the choice you have made, or discuss the matter with your professor first You should include at least ONE piece of multimedia to help engage the readers.
