The Digital Exhibitions are opportunities to be creative and tell an original story about an aspect of clothes and culture that interests you. The exhibition should be framed by your own critical analysis about what this clothing means in context, and why it matters. Your Brief Digital Exhibition may focus on any aspect of clothing culture, but should draw upon at least one tool of interpretation for material culture and use at least one methodological tool of observation introduced in the module. It should have the following components: 1. 2-3 images, created by you or sourced from media and culture archives. 2. 2-3 explanatory captions (600-700 words total) which should: be labelled as Figure 1, etc. with a short title; identify copyright and source for the image, and succinctly describe the subject of the image; briefly describe and contextualise the image and clothing; briefly interpret the significance and meaning of the image. You should use at least one method of observation and one theory introduced in the module. 3. Brief reflection on creating this exhibition. What did you try? EXPLORING SCHOOL UNIFORM CULTURE IN ASIA: IDENTITY, TRADITION, AND FREEDOM by (Name) The Name of the Class (Course) Professor (Tutor) The Name of the School (University) The City and State where it is locatedThe Date Image 1: Hong Kong Marymount Secondary School Uniform Image Link:https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mss.edu.hk%2F&psig=AOvVaw3UE9m9LypBytpAwjjn3M_A&ust=1731479478307000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CAMQjB1qFwoTCKjT-vmV1okDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE Copyright and Source: Photo provided by Mary Mount Secondary School Caption and Analysis This is the uniform of Marymount Secondary School in Hong Kong. In this school, female students of secondary 1 to 4 can wear a blue dress or a yellow dress, and the senior secondary female students, the senior Secondary 1 and 2, and the senior secondary 3 and 4 or the equivalents of Junior Senior secondary 3 and 4 wear the blue dress. In contrast, the senior secondary school students, 5 and 6, wear the same dress but in blue. This freedom is different from the educational cultures of Hong Kong, and it gives students some freedom in terms of dress code while maintaining unity and discipline in the school (Pyun, 2020). In this image, I have used observations, and the tools I applied are ethnography and observation. In order to discover why the Marymount Secondary School uniform has cultural importance, ethnographic methods, and observation have proved to be vital. The ethnographic approaches I used in this study show how the uniform creates a student's character, order, and unity (Hammersley, 2018). They also explain the appearance of individuality within school precincts, where students are given two options: blue and yellow. The observation brings out the dynamic of how students own, adjust, and perform in the uniform as well as in other facets of life to reflect manners and togetherness (Atkinson, 2016). However, it also disguises subtle class differentiation. Altogether, these methods illustrate the idea of the uniform as an emblem of personality and unity in the context of the school's framework. Tastefully, the uniform's design is essential, and it has neat cuts, just enough to show modesty, discipline, and oneness among the students. The decision for the younger student to pick between the two colours is that the child can meet their personal preferences while still being confined to the expectations of conformity (Chiu, 2020). This choice is a practice of small but positive autonomy regarding self-identity formation in a constraining school environment. Interpretation Using Semiotic Analysis Analysing the use of signs, I can state that the Marymount uniform's colours and arrangement are significant. The colour blue forms a natural reference to discipline and order because it is associated with the school (Wang, 2021). The yellow symbol of optimism and energy can help young students express their personalities. Theory Application: Social Identity Theory Based on social identity theory, wearing a uniform provides students with a common identity, making them unanimous. This is made possible by Marymount's uniform policy, which makes all students dress in the same way regardless of class. Such policy illustrates how clothing can help create and maintain collective identity in sources of a charade that by collectivist orientation like Hong Kong (Hogg, 2016). That is why when providing young students with a choice of colour, the school does not defeat individuality but, at the same time, does not surrender its principles of unity and respect for authority. This uniform exemplifies what education in Hong Kong is,...
